29lb Ling

Put up a good fight, too. Then it saw the boat and freaked the f%$k out and put up an even BIGGER fight. Took 15 or 20 minutes to reel it close enough to the boat to hook it and throw it into our ice chest.

Naw man, here's how you ice a realllly freaking big fish (my experience was with a swordfish of about 300lbs.)

First, you must be on a boat big enough to handle said fish, otherwise you must be creative. (Usually you're expecting a big ass fish if you're putting whole squid on the line.)

When taking it back first you purchase many many many bags of ice, then you cover the bed of your pickup in ice, then you throw in the fish, then you add enough to mostly cover the fish, then you throw some tarps over it and tie those down.

My dad said I should have thrown a tarp down first too, but I wanted the water to leak out, to lessen the load on the poor little mazda B2000 as I went over the hill.

Oh BTW now that I'm done explaining exactly how (probably) Alpha iced that fish

NICE FREAKING CATCH!!!!

you have an ice chest that big?

The ice chest was something like 4.5 or 5' long. The fish just barely fit inside.

300lbs was a little more than this puppy. She was a mere 29lbs and only 4.5 to 5 feet long. We were on a 30' Wellcraft 290 Coastal Tournament Edition boat with twin Yamaha 225 outboard motors, totaling somewhere in the vicinity of 600HP. This was something like a $200k boat we were on; whoah. It weighed 12,000lbs with a full fuel tank and got around 1.4 mpg.

Anyways, I caught her about 7 miles off the Galveston jetties after having travelled 60 miles out to find nothing. We caught the vast majority of our fish at that one location 7 miles off. Anyways, I reeled her in close enough to the boat so that our driver and host could hook her. When he did he swung her up over the side of the boat and directly into the ice chest with one felll swoop. Unhooked her and slammed the ice chest lid shut. Lings are known to put up a hell of a fight, even after they are in the boat. Our host had his shin slashed by one before, and the gauges knocked out of a previous boat by one as well. After that fish we headed straight back in, as it took up the rest of the ice chest, pretty much.

I wouldn't mind trying to catch a big sword fish, sail fish, or marlin though.

Sword fish are boring, you use ridiculously high test line, and just set the tension so all you do is just keep reeling. You're strapped in the chair and the rod is strapped to you. If you set the hook good, (Just yank ridiculously hard) it's a no lose situation for you, and for the fish, well it's served with pilaf.

Boring. You can even change the gear reduction on the fly so cranking is easier, or faster.

Gime me a good trout any day, on like an 8lb test line, then there's some actual "I might lose it" happening.
Rich, RIP.

Alphamazing

The fish was hooked using a simple circle hook, half a 4oz sardine, with 30lb test (maybe 20lb) line. No gear reduction either, but this fish was pullin' pretty damned hard I thought the rod was going to snap. Went around the boat, then under the boat, then towards the engines, then back to the side. Fish was crazy.

Moi? Nah, I'm a fatass... All 135lbs of me. That gives me like 45lbs on Alpha... and I'm only 5'3.. which means he's got like 10 inches on me... sumbitch... I'm a little roly poly compared to alpha..

Nice fish!

Saw a guy play a 4' barracuda with 2lb line on a fly-fishing pole; wire leader, of course.
