I just picked up a 91 GS500 to learn to ride on. While I am waiting for my MSF course I intend to do a little maintenance/upgrade work on it. The tasks I intend to complete in no particular order are listed below. I have been going thru the various FAQ and online guides you guys have created and it is great info. I have ordered most of the parts and should get them in a few days. I will keep you posted as to my progress and probably bug you guys for answers if I get stuck.

1) Replace leaking fork seals
2) Replace stock fork springs with Progressive
3) Change oil/filter
4) Replace spark plugs
5) Replace front and rear brake pads
6) Replace nasty brake fluid and bleed
7) Replace stock air filter with K& N drop in
8) Rejet carbs for new filter and existing V&H exhaust
9) Clean out gas tank & coat with POR15
10) FUTURE : repaint tank & covers to get rid of poor prior paint job

Thanks,
Pat D

Depends on how hard you intend to ride, but you might want to consider straight rate springs.

I love mine, I ride the full blown race spec for my weight too.

Your front end will actually communicate with you. (Unlike the stock which will never tell you about its' feelings.)

That said the ride is a little harsher, but totally tolerable.

sounds almost exactly like my list!

there are some good comments and links if you search in "Odds and Ends" for "noob introduction"  that's where i've been posting my status.

be slow and careful with the POR15.  i missed a spot and i'm not having to patch 2 remaining pinholes from the outside.  not ideal!!!

go ahead and get steel braided brake lines while you're changing/bleeding the brake fluid...    ;)
05 GS500F     Jets - 20/132.5/62.5    Progressive Fork Springs
GSXR can       K&N lunchbox

I would include a valve-gear inspection on the list also.

Not sure if you have visited my site and the photo album section. LOTS of photos there with comments on my 90 project.

Look below in my signature for the link. After getting there, click Home for the top or jump straight to the photo album.

God save us from LED turn signal mods!

If it was repainted, it was probably originally "Jade Green" like my '91, possibly the least attractive color the GS came in.  The Pegasus Blue of the same year looks pretty good.

Good luck and congrats.
I brake for bezier curves.
