Fuel starvation or something else? (Solved).

So, I've finally finished the repaint on my GS and put her back together today (well, almost). Replaced the fuel lines... and fired her up but its idling pretty low with full choke, if I close the choke it dies. When I give it throttle it wants to die too...

I may have left my fuel line a bit long and if this is the case, can this create an issue if the fuel has to be pulled upwards against gravity?

Any input is appreciated.

It runs flawless on the reserve setting... So for now I can live with that.

However my speedometer no longer functions.

Well, I was going to suggest messing with your idle screw. But since it runs ok on reserve, that would seem to rule that out. Weird. As for the speedo.. check both ends of the cable to make sure they're firmly attached, and make sure the cable is in one piece. Also, make sure it's lubed well.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

Sounds like you have the same problem as I do.  The ON and RES lines are probably reversed.

Esih

Pulled the speedo cable, doesn't appear to be in one piece, I can spin the bottom end and the top doesn't budge. Not sure how that happened because the bike just sat while it awaited paint.

I dont think my lines are reversed, but I'll check... Because if that was the case it should still be able to run on either setting no (assuming my lines are both fine)?

I'm leaning towards my on line being pinched just enough to starve it when I give it throttle.

Just pulled up a fiche... and yes, I appear to have switched my line on the frame mounted chicken, oops!

it's an easy mistake.  mine runs fine for 5 minutes on ON, but runs constantly on RES.  and over flows on PRIME!

Need to fiddle with that a bit.

interesting about the speedo.  my tach is acting weird, but it's been sitting for 6 years. a simple paint job shouldn't have busted the cable...  strange coincidence.

Speedo fixed with a new cable.

Still trying to iron out the fuel issue, I pulled it apart(again) and re-routed the fuel lines, went to start and the battery was dead. :P

Charged, topped off the levels, started, sputtered, died. Didn't start for a several cranks. Started again, idled about 3-4k with choke, then slowly died. Couldn't get it started again.

I'll check the tank petcock, I notice it will turn a bit past the 90 degree angle, should I crank it all the way to that point, or line it up with the mark?

Again, it ran flawless on RES before I un-reversed my lines.

The tank petcock will lock both ways. Just turn it so the slot points exactly in the direction of flow.

Esih

Messed around a bit with the petcock alignment on the tank... Seems to have been turned a bit far.

Adjusted it a bit, tried starting, sounded like it wanted to start. Adjusted it a little more, started but barely kept an idle with choke, but ran for about a minute.

Let it sit for a few, went back to it, put the key and turned the ignition on, and no lights, nothing, totally dead. Put the battery on the charger and it looks like it has a pretty stable charge. Not sure what could have happened to kill all of my electrical. :/

Well, I fixed it. Rather embarrassing in the end.

Electrical seemed fine after I reattached the leads, dunno what the issue was there.

So, the fix.

I happened to glance at my fuel can that I had drained the tank into and remembered that I was almost empty when I drained it, and I poored most of it into the lawnmower. It occured to me how much fuel was actually in the bike's tank, like, almost none.

To make  a long story short, filled up my gascan and then dumped 2 gallons into the gs, and problem solved.

Atleast I had a great ride today after I put it back together!

Can anyone tell me if PRI draws gas from regular tank area or the reserve section?

Thanks.

should be the main tank tube.

my understanding (thanks GSTWIN.COM!) is that the vacuum line pulls open a diaphram inside the petcock when on RUN, putting it on PRIME simply bypasses this diaphram and lets the fuel flow directly from the tank.

it would be great to see a cutaway of how this works.  i plan to disassemble mine this week.  perhaps I can post some picy's.

Main tank, yes, but the reserve section thereof.

They both draw from the same reservoir, but the RES from a lower pick-up point than the ON. And PRI feeds out fo the RES tube.

I'm not sure how this works.  The lines from the main to reserve come from the same hole (petcock) in the tank.  One isn't physically lower than the other, so how does reserve differ from main?

MarkusN

Look again. There are two nipples coming from the petcock. That petcock actually is a twin. The ON tube is a standpipe that goes a bit higher into the tank than the pick-up for RES / PRI.
