I want to roll the bike up next to my condo onto a little patio type deal that we have.  Should the bike be running as I'm pushing it or do I just unlock the steering and push it while it's off.  Or does it not really matter.

When at all possible I like to straddle the bike when doing this type of maneuvering with motor running. (Better control that way.)
If the incline is not too steep you can push it (pulling on the rear grip makes it easier going up), but you don't have real good control that way. When the bike wants to go over the other side you'll have a hard time holding her back.

Boy have *I* learned THIS lesson!

I let my bike use his engine muscle when I can, so I move him running whenever I can.

+1.

Even if I have to move my bike from one end of my driveway to the other, the engine's always running.  Makes it easier.

Now if I can get it in my head that moving the bike with the engine on and in 1st gear (not sitting on it) is a BAAAAD idea, I'd be all set.

Well it won't be me my dad will be on the other side of the bike also.  I can't ride it up or sit on it because it's a grassy incline with a bunch of roots and what not.

If no one's sitting on bike, engine off. :thumb: You'll be developing your own muscles!

That's Verbali of the GS-500.de forum.

No knobys, and he did make it to the top:

Actually i used to park mine on my patio. And i had a grassy hill to climb to get to it as well. But I always did it in first gear with feet down. When i got to the top of the grass. Then I had a bunch of hard left turns to get it to the patio avoiding a tree, roots, and a shed. But all of it I did with it in gear and riding it, again feet down.

I just got used to it. And never laid the bike down doing it

Hmm well turned out my dad and I couldn't lift it over the curb so it's still in the parking lot.  It's locked and covered at least.

MarkusN

Curb: same thing: Learn to control clutch and throttle well enough to ride-walk it over it with feet down. It's a skill that will come in handy.
