Hey everybody, i am new to bikes and am purchasing an 04 or 05 GS500f very soon, and i wanted to see what modifications actually improved the bike stats overall. My plan is to buy a yoshimura exhaust system as well as rejet the carbs.  I was hoping people would be able to tell me how much an improvement in hp, torque, accel, top speed, and if anyone knows how much it helps w/ 1/4 mile time.

Turd Ferguson

Mmm...exhaust and rejet might get you around 2-3 hp gain tops.  Adding a K&N lunchbox filter should get you another few hp.  I'd guess maybe a tenth in the quarter mile tops.  I wouldn't worry about quarter mile times dude...or else you bought the wrong bike.  I'd spend a few years getting down good riding skills before you worry much about speed.

Welcome to the site!  Enjoy yourself, its a pretty fun/insane ride.

Yeah the GS is not a warp capable ship.

But for the twisty bits I'll scrap it out with ANYTHING. I don't care if you have triple my power, I just lean it like I mean it.

You only need 5hp to go through a turn.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof, is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools....

i know the bike is not specifically fast for a 1/4 mile drag, but i was considering the use of it for bracket racing, where a consistant time is better than a faster time.  i was comparing the gs to the ninja 500, i like the look and feel of the gs a lot better, but mechanically the ninja is slightly better, but i prefer the air cooled anyway.  i was actually also planin on a k and n  lunchbox filter also, but forgot to mention it.  i am only kinda disappointed that apparently the bike kinda falls on its face  in 5 and 6 past right around 9000 rpm, but then again u can always play around with the grearings

Mods forget the yosi, get the Jardine instead, it's a bolt from headers to pipe.  K & N lunchbox would be good, then you will have to rejet.
Ok 5th and 6th gears your best bet would be to do a sprocket change
change your throttle to 1/5th throttle less twist for WOT
Install 4.5" Katana rear rim, wider tire you will be able to put on much stickier tires.

Good luck on your racing and enjoy the GS.  IT can do everything from daily commuter, to haveing fun in the twisties, taken to track days and bracket drag racing.

yea like he said. if your gonna spend the cash for slip on (they dont make a full exaust ) get the jarden full race exaust :) i want it bad but i'm going back to college :( so my funds are limited again

thats for the tip on the exhaust.  i also saw that on a modified ninja 500, a dual exhaust was installed with an individual exhaust going to the left and right side of the bike, is there such an exhaust for the gs500?

There is no dual exaust made for the GS500. That is custom territory. Jim knopf did it. Lets look for a pic. . . .

EDIT: couldn't find them.

do the front forks first... you can do the other junk later.. no sense in doing any power mods until you get the front end fixed up, cause it royally sucks when it is stock.

*bonks self on head*  I forgot the suspenions mods you can do racetec or progressive.  Racetec is better for racing sense you order the one for your specific weight.  Progressive is better for everyday use ( PERSONAL OPPION).

Rear you can do the Katana rear shock swap.  It helps alot.
