ho--crap i just did mine yesterday. have 1 drill 1 box of drill bits and 2 really big balls before starting. i removed the 8 bowl screws drilled 6 out, there was some emissions crap screwed to one of the bowls drilled both those screws out also removed the top of the carbs where the needles go drilled 2 out 4 screws out AND THE DAM PILOT SCREW COVERS drilled x2. Tag every dam thing you remove from the carb, if you say to your self "I'm not gonna tag this one because it's easy i'll remember!!" thats the one that you WILL forget.

so 5.5 or 6 hours later 1st service is done bike is jetted a little bigger and the wife is pissed because the house smells like gasoline  :dunno_white: o well.

Ohh and all the part numbers above r what i got too. but my stealership had the jets for 2.50 + tax each

what do you mean drill the heads off how did u get them out if they didnt have heads on them

Well... you turn the carbs over (having drained them first, of course), and there are 8 (on your year) yellowish (but steel, not brass) Phillips-head "screws" (machine bolts) holding the bowl covers on. Each one passes through a non-threaded hole in the flange on the bowl cover and then into a threaded hole in the matching flange around the carb bowl, part of the carb body. So...  you get the ones out that you can, and for those you can't (the Phillips-heads strip out trying), you can put a drill bit right into the center of the Phillips-head, drill (carefully!) just until the head falls free of the shank (spins up the drill bit, actually). That leaves the shank in place, but it will be loose- which, by the way, disproves the theories that they're held in by some chemical bond or electrolysis. Once you have all the remaining heads off, you can just lift the bowl cover free (carefully, cleaning shavings away IMMEDIATELY... you do NOT want any of that stuff getting in the float valve seats, and it's close...), exposing about half of each remaining shank. As I said, once the bolt/screw head is removed, they're no longer tight, and now some is exposed, so you can just twirl it out with your fingertips.

Hope that's clear. Others have other methods that they swear by, but I can only speak about what I've done, and that's only mine. Also, I'm pretty sure that the pre-'01 models have just two larger screws per bowl instead of the four per bowl that we have, so it's possible they were easier to get out.

+1
but me being so paranoid, once the screw head came off i quickly stopped drilling and turned the drill to reverse with out releasing the pressure between the bit and the bold(does that make sense to anyone but me??) and used the same bit to back out the bolt with out taking the cover off and risking metal getting into the carbs.   :2guns: i'm kicking myslef in the A$$ for not taking pics

I rejetted this afternoon and had no problems with anything, including the screws.  I rejetted and installed my K&N lunchbox in about 1.5 hours.  10% rule dude...you have to be 10% smarter than anything you work on.
