Hello GS'ers!

My '95 GS500 seems to be a little choppy. This primarily happens when the bike is a little cold. But it can happen when it is warmed up as well. For example, I will be laying the power down without changing the twist angle of my wrist, and the bike will either pick up or slow down a little. There is also a noticable dead spot between 4k and 5k RPMS. This is sometimes annoying and dangerous when I may be trying to pick up speed to merge with traffic or start from a light etc.

Could it be in need of a carb cleaning? I know it is possible to do this yourself, but I have never worked on a bike before. I heard rust from the tank can clog the carbs. Could it need a rejetting? Or an oil change? An ignition advancer?

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm sure a carb cleaning could help but there are other possibilities, if your running with the stock air box and filter you don't need a re-jet. You can probably rule out the ignition adv., and the oil change as long as its some what clean and on the full mark. But your carbs might be out of sync., or the float level is off, how do the spark plugs look, and how long as the current gas been in the tank. You also could be in need of a valve adjustment, how long have youu had the bike, and how many miles are on it.
Being naked was great, but now that I'm older I thought I should cover up!!!!

Mods?  What mods, no really its stock!!

Its called a lean surge. Jet it. Yes even stock bikes need to be rejetted.

Maybee lean, but make sure the carbs are clean first. It shouldn't be too bad all stock, but it is a little lean. When you're in the carbs take not of the jet size. Stock is 37.5 pilot and 122.5 main. You can go from there
