Someone tried to steal my GS

I screwed up my wrist, so I haven't ridden in a couple days...  I came down this morning to find that someone tried to steal my GS.  The popped the cover off the lock and it looks like they jammed a screwdriver in it...  I found the lock cover on the ground by my bike and was able to pop it back on, but the little spring and "door" are screwed up, never to be replaced.

So, my garage is supposed to be "secured," but there's an alternate way to get in...  Which isn't locked.  On top of that, they leave the gate open all day.

Apparently, we have cameras in the garage, so management is looking through them......  Who knows if they'll find anything.

I'm really glad I still have my bike, but I'm so f%$king pissed that I can't leave it somewhere safe.   I think moto thieves should be treated like horse thieves in the old west...  Shot on sight.

I have a cover, but I never use it 'cause it's so huge...  I think I'm going to start...

What I really don't get is that they didn't even mess with the SV parked less than 10 ft away from my GS...  Why the hell would someone go for the GS500?  Especially when it's pouring rain outside...

I personally got tired of wondering if my bike was still outside when I was at a resturant or a store or at school or work and opted for full coverage.  I wouldn't mind if it did get stolen now.  I'll just get another one.  Takes a huge burden off your shoulders when you know the insurance company has your back.

I was thinking about that this morning...  I have NO insurance.  Why?  'cause I paid so little for my GS that insurance would cost more than I paid for it...   

But, I'm starting to think that insurance would be cheaper than buying a new GS.   

I think I'm gonna pick up a disk lock this weekend...  I think they may have left that SV alone 'cause it has one...  If my memory serves.


So, what's a good one that I can't pick with a pen?

When lowlifes/crackheads/theives see someting sitting for a couple of days without moving they figure that their chaces of being caught are much less. If the SV moves every day or so and yours sat there for several days, they may figure you're out of town or something. People are always suprised when their bikes or cars are jacked when there is a nicer one nearby. Thieves probally figure that the not so fancy one is less likely to have an alarm and is lower profile when driving.

If you park in the same spot all the time you should consider getting a heavy chain/cable and locking it down to something secure. That's more deterent than an alarm or cover. Of course all three together work best.

I'm paying under $100/year for comp now. Even at that rate it's almost a wash since I know I won't get much if it's stolen, but it's worth it for the peace of mind.

Well, depending on how much it costs per year...  @ $500 a year, it might be worth it...  Any more than that wouldn't.

I don't have any sort of lock for my bike, other than the fork lock. But I do have an alarm on it, which happens to be rather ear piercing. That's mostly to keep kids from playing with it, though. If anybody wants to steal my bike, they are going to steal it. I count on it's lack of desirability to keep it around, especially now that it has the case all scuffed up from going down, in addition to the bit of rust, lack of fairing, and general rat bike appearance. Still runs really well, though so I'm a happy camper.

im sorry to hear about the attempt theft, the first day i took my bike out i parked in my gfs driveway. 30min later i hear her mom screamin out the window. When i come about she said 3 guys had backd a van into the driveway and looked like they were about to toss my gs in the back.  after that i parked it behind the garage where it was out of site.  cant trust anyone nowadays.

wow, what state do you live in for 100yr comp, thats what i pay per month right now. still cheaper than my 300month car thoguh.

I live in WA state and my comp is $168 a year through USAA / Progressive.

Did you see the car commercial where a guy walks up to this crummy looking car parked in the ghetto, and looks arround to make sure nobodys watching. He then pulls the cover off and It's a brand new nice car? 

You should do something like that, except that the cover would have to be clear 

But seriously, Big chain and big lock, that's about the most secure thing you can do.

If you put a cover on it people will probally think there's a sweet bike underneath, making it more likely to be stolen.

Well...  I put the cover on tonight...  And a sign that said something like:

Attention Thieves:

You have been captured on our security cameras.  The Seattle Police Department is reviewing the tapes.  If you are seen here again you will be arrested.

Thieves are not welcome here.


I'm gonna pick up a lock & chain tomorrow.

You know, I've looked at those big chains before.  The local bike shops carry a few.  They look like they would do the job.  Where do most people who ride with those big chains store them while they're riding?  Would you wear it like a bandolier?  Is that safe?

Yeah, 32.  And the "mean streets" of Bainbridge Island are nothing compared to Beacon Hill.   I am sorry to hear about the damage to your bike though.  What do you estimate it will cost to repair?
