Led turn signals, indicators, blinkers the definative solution

I came here the other day seeking an answer to a dilemma that I had when I installed 4 LED indicators on my friend's GS500. I installed a non-load sensitive blinker relay and was not anticipating any problems. Upon completing the install to my horror all four indicators went on at the same time.

I read several posts on this issue which provided a wiring diagram suggesting 2 diodes be installed in the circuit in the vicinity of the turn signal indicator lamp which I did and which didnt work for me. Maybe I bought the wrong diodes or misread the diagram. But anyway I solved the problem and I am surprised at how bloody easy it was....wait for it....wait for it...

Just remove the turn signal ijndicator lamp from the dash. Thats right just take the bulb from the connector and the LED indicators work fine. Sure you dont have the indicator lamp flashing on the dash but who needs that.

I found this out the hard way after I had cut both wires to the indicator lamp bulb in the dash and wired in diodes and stuff. As the bike currently stands i have removed the diodes from this wiring (AS IT DIDNT WORK FOR ME) and I just insulated the ends of the two wires that had originally gone to the bulb. I am assuming that just removing the bulb from the connector would do the same thing as the wires will terminate at this junction.

Why couldnt someone just tell me this before??    :dunno_white:

No hard feelings. Hope this can help someone else in my predicament. Peace out

Because most people just buy stuff made for the bike..those of us who like making stuff work through modification aren't doing too much of anything with LED turn signals.

Because we want our turn signal indicator to work!

I am certain that somewhere in the previous 399 requests for LED conversion problems I mentioned that removing the dash lamp was an option. You still had to change the TSR (turn signal relay) just to get them working.

In fact I do remember someone else posting...maybe it was the 232nd request??...that removed the dash lamp to get their modification working.

Eventually...only god knows when...Suzuki will go all LED, except the head light, on this bike. With the way LED tech is moving, the head light won't be far behind. There are some super bright white LEDs now. You just have to cluster them up to get the same candle power.
-=Doug......   IT ≠ IQ.

God save us from LED turn signal mods!

Yep, I for one said I did it that way on 10-26-06.  http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=31445.msg345591#msg345591

Okay I stuffed up I should have read more of the posts...there is just so damn many...I suppose it doesnt help when squids like me start new ones

Hey, I am far from good at searching, there is a very vast amount of info here and it frequently is hard to word a search properly to find what you want.

Try your best and if you can't find it, ask.

Yeah dude, the search function isn't the best I've ever used.  I think the problem relates more to the off-topic conversations that have always ensued in every thread on this site.  It makes it hard to wade through the crud to get to the good stuff.

Maybe this thread will help someone in the future who couldn't find the answer like you!

Just an update to let other know how to have four LED blinkers and a pilot lamp in the dash.

The HD12PAC or whatever was recommended doesn't work. The LED's don't draw enough current to switch it. You need a Narva 68251BL or similar flasher unit. IT MUST SAY "FOR LEDS"
Quote68251BL Blister Pack
12 Volt 3 Pin L.E.D Electronic Flasher with Pilot
Suitable for L.E.D indicator lamps. Operates at ultra low
current of 1mA (0.02 watts) or higher currents to a maximum of 2.5 amps per side (30 watts) where a mix of L.E.D and incandescent globes might be used.

Plug your LED blinkers to the wiring loom, swap this unit with the factory one. I had to cut the original connector off and crimp on some female spade connectors to the wires so it is just a push on / pull off affair. Then from the third terminal on the relay, "pilot", I ran a wire up to the front of the bike and soldered on a bulb holder from a spare dash wiring harness I had. This is the positive side. Then hook up you bulb of choice and run a wire from the negative side to ground.

There you go. LED blinkers and an idiot light.
