Yep, tomorrow marks our third straight day of school closures due to snow, ice, and cold (average temp today was 26--average temp for this time of year is normally 46 or so).  My students must be doing some mighty type of snow dance to extend their Thanksgiving break out so long.

Well if it makes you feel any warmer, it was 80 today for the high in Texas.  In two days we'll have ice and possibly snow.  I'll believe it when I see it.  Should make for a fun GS commute to work.

4 inches of snow is somewhat respectable, especially when you're not use to it this time of the year.

Me and my wife spent part of our honeymoon in New Zealand on the south island.  We figured it would be fun to hit the Remarkables for some skiing, so we rented some tire chains (a first for me, after spending many insane winters in Canada on winter or all season tires).  Man, they were completely useless.  One of the chains tore off and stripped paint off the side of the car.  Anyhow, long story short, we were within ONE km of the peak when we finally decided to turn around and come back.  Visibility was less than 8 feet, and the edge of the montain wasn't protected with a guard rail.  The Mrs stepped out of the car and helped me do nearly a blind 3 point turn on the mountain side, and we headed back.

The next day we took the tour bus up.  The tour bus driver was nearly as talented as the bus drivers in India, but that's another story.

Four inches of snow doesn't seem like much if you're from somewhere that gets a lot of snow every year.  But we're not complete wusses in Washington.  There are a couple of things to keep in mind.

One, our snow isn't the nice dry, fluffy shaZam! you're used to.  It's wet and slushy and extremely slippery to drive on.  Further, because the temperature only ever barely dips below freezing, the snow melts, and then refreezes during the night into ice.  And then you get more slush on top of it.  So it's even worse to drive on, if it's even possible to maintain traction.  I've driven in "real" snow, which is easy if you're patient.  So it's not like I'm making stuff up.  I'd drive on Eastern Washington dry snow over Western Washington ice and slush any day..  Further further, because it rarely snows, we don't keep hardly any snow removal equipment handy.  It's just not cost effective.  So if it snows (slushes), then it just sits there.  No one is coming to plow it.  So it's not like there's snow everywhre except the kind of clear roads.  The roads stay slushy and icy and impossible.

(Still, some people are wusses.  But my point stands.)

Thank you for your valuable contribution to the discussion.

No, seriously.  From the bottom of our hearts.

Thanks.

Ok if you've ever lived in the midwest/Great lake states, you get everything wet snow, dry snow, lake effect snow, yellow snow, etc.  Some winters you get a blizzard. Some winters you get nothing.  WHat people forget is that with their 4x4's, AWD's, and FWD's you can get going on the snow/ice but good luck stopping using your brakes.  Unless you love doing donuts all over the roads.  If you've ever lived in the country you probably wont get a plow unless there is at least 6 inches and that wont come through until a week later if your lucky.  As far as the northeast goes you learn how to drive in the nastiness or you just don't make it.  How's that for contributing.  I really hope it meets your standards for approval.

Oh give Wannabe a brake he don't mean to come off like a prick (J/K) but he's a cop and you know how they can be. Man I love the snow I wish N.C. got more of it. We only get snow 1 time a year if that.

My truck should go pretty good in the snow this winter.  It is a GMC Sierra Z71 extra cab 4X4.  The only thing is, I think the tires are old as hell on it.  They have plenty of tread but I think the rubber is dried up and hard.  They spin like mad in the rain and don't stop worth a crap (ie., they slide on the painted cross walk lines on the road).
I have no idea how old the these tires are, but I am wondering if it is possible for tires to get old and dry and slick like this and, if so, how long has my truck likely had them on there?
I miss my Jeep.  I had a four inch lift, 33's, and a Warn winch on front.  It was unstopple in the snow.

My best snow car ever was my 82 honda civic. It was a stick so i could slip the clutch if I needed to.  I could make that thing go through anything.
