My mom made a trip up north of us for business and brought us back Glazier Hot Dogs. Anyone from upstate NY who doesn't know of/hasn't had Glaziers is probably going to be tared and feathered. Glazier Hot Dogs are famous up this way. They're colored red, smoked, and full of spices. They have a very very distinct flavor and are almost like kielbasa. We boil or grill them and serve them on a toasted bun with sauerkraut and mustard. Talking to AJ got me thinking about the extreme regional differences when it comes to hot dogs...In Montreal i've often had hotdogs with coleslaw on top.

What brands/special things are popular in your areas?

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

Where I am from in Upstate (Glens Falls) New York the famous hotdogs are Dirty Johns (New Way Lunch, Since 1919), The Zookie Dog, The Dog Shack Dog, or Zacks Drive In Dog. All are chili dog type hot dogs. Now when you get down to Troy New York you have the Hot Dog Charlies Hot Dog which is actually a Humboldt Meat Company (Also From Troy) Hot Dog.

God I love Hot Dogs!!!!

Cheers,

Mike

I had those when I rode through upstate NY on a trip a year and a half ago.  From the sounds of it they are a huge deal like you said, and every little town had their own variation of preparing them or set of toppings they used with some unique name.  To be honest I don't remember exactly what they tasted like, but I remember the little hole in the wall gas station/convenience store we got them from.

I guess my favorite local dog (well in the midwest) is from the Brat Stop in Kenosha, WI.  Big juicy all beef 1/4 lb dog on a toasted bun.  I always add spicy brown mustard, no ketchup.  My dad would take me there when ever we were in that area or on a trip south.  We even timed it so we would be going by the Brat Stop at lunch time

Another regional dog (may have a wider audience?) is the Chicago dog which comes with a pickle spear, tomatos, peppers, relish, oniions and celery salt on a poppyseed bun.
