I have to admit I have one fear.. things that fly and sting.   I use to harass wasps and dirt dobbers with wd-40 (almost instant death) until I got attacked for it.  Now I will shrill like a little girl if anything with a stinger is around me.  That guy was crazy though.. I mean those fire balls were huge.

FearedGS500

they crazy part was he said the one guy was HIGHLY ALLERGIC  to them !

Were there more humane methods?

Yes.

Would I have done it that way?

No.

My buddy has class A haz-mat gear. (Why? I don't know, he's a wacko.) I would have suited up and captured the whole swarm in a five gallon bucket. Conscience at that point would have stopped further debauchery, but if not explosives would have been involved.
Rich, RIP.

Im surprised more people havent thought of this photo spread as idiotic.

Honey bees are non-aggressive. They dont' sting without good reason.

They make honey in honeycomb hives from pollen they gather from flowers nearby. When a bee finds flowers it does a figure-8 dance in the hive that delineates precisely in which direction and how far away the flowers are.

If a bee flies up to you it will circle you to check you out. It will do this several times until it has some idea of how cool/not cool you are.

Bees have good sense of smell. They know their queen by smell, in this case their queen was at the center of their swarm.

Bees sometimes run out of energy while flying and can be near death. If you find one in this state and give them some honey or sugar they will often eat it, get up and fly off again.

Bees will land on you and not sting. They may bite out of curiosity. If you aren't making sudden movements and aren't standing on their hive then they won't sting you.

If you are uncomfortable being circled by a bee, wave/clear the air slowly. They will eventually break it off.

They live on their honey during the winter when there is nothing else to eat. If there's not enough honey stored up, they all die of starvation.

They take care of their queen who lays all the hive's bees in the honeycomb, and would follow her anywhere.

There's no reason to torch a swarm of 10,000 live bees.

The entertainment value!  But seriously you can't allow a swarm like that to take over the place where your kids play.  Bees can obviously be dangerous and some varieties are aggressive enough to make them a real threat.  I would have done the same thing (no bee-keepers around here to come collect them).

nightrider

Its not that hard to get them to move.

Bees dont like smoke, obviously from their habit of living in trees that could burn down. Make smoke under them and they'll leave. If you don't like where they go, smoke again. Eventually they'll pick a place farther away.

Or, knock the swarm into a bucket with a pole, cover, and carry away. Would require balls or protective gear, however you could make do with stuff you have around the house.
