de-restricting

My 2003 GS500 is factory restricted to 33bhp. How could I de-restrict it to full power?.
Is it a job I could do myself given I have very little experience in this field.

I think........

there is a big washer in the intake book between the carb and the engine....
remove carbs and pull out washer(s)
reinstall carbs

that is how most bikes are restricted....from what i have been told/read
