Buddywho?

Hello everyone.  I did not know the format here for introducing myself, even though I did notice the "who are you and where are you from" thread.  On the home town forum I am on they have a completely different thread category specifically for new joiners and the rest of the community welcomes them into the fold.  Forgive me for my lack of knowledge  :nono:.  This is kind of a greeting and a shared experience message and I did not want to get lost in the shuffle on the 57th page rofl.  So to be kind to the authors of that thread I will re-introduce myself there as well.

Got my 2004 GS500F back in November, however I have been occasionally browsing these threads a month, or so prior to that.  Recently I was one of the Newbs who's battery got hit by the cold weather bug.  I do notice that there is an optional 'lights-on' first position on the ignition switch, so I was pretty sure I don't leave it on that when I park my moto.

I am figuring that since I left it at the storage place in the cold for 11 days straight, without touching the bike, the battery took its well dserved sleep  .  I got the fore-mentioned Walmart battery and boy was that an experience.  My newbness shined, rofl.  I must have blanked out the "sideways battery" part of the descriptions from here, because when I saw that the terminals where in the opposite postion as the factory battery, my brain froze :o .  After I took out the old one I tried stuffing the new one in there bottom first.

Well being my persistent, stubborn self, I managed to stuff it in there rofl.  Easier in than comming out rofl.  I just about gave up on figuring out this perplexing puzzle you folks have grown to accept when I decided to  just sit it to the side and wondered what the difference was.  I put down the new battery on the ground, after 20minutes of tugging and struggling to get it back out, and was contemplating ordering a new factory battery.  I decided to sit the old battery on top of the new one and thought, what is the difference?  Then I saw, that Sesame Street moment  , hmm the old one is as wide as the new one is tall, go figure.  'Ah that is right, the guys said it is a sideways battery.'  ROFL  Yeah I was ticked at my ignorance.  Well I figured it out the hard way and now my new battery has scratchmarks on its side making it look like a war worthy General.

Now my first question to you folks, how to I make an extention for the negativve post?  Also, is it possible to put the the postitive wire on the positive post the correct way?  I had to turn/twist the negative post around 180 degrees so I could seat it somewhat, and bolt it on.  All advice is welcome and all comments will be cherished in my humility rofl.

  Have a good day folks.

Welcome!

We're not as uptight as other boards, requiring you to introduce yourself in the Newbies Forum or whatnot.  Glad this board was of help to you.

I do not know the answers to connecting the positive and negative cables on the new sideways battery, but hopefully one of those members will answer soon.

Again, welcome!

Buddywho?

Thanks for the greetings both of ya!  I will re-search that old thread I saw where somebody mention making an extention on the negative post and will send them a PM or what have you and see if that works.  I know it is probably an easy operation and not neccessarily an immediate concern of mine.  Just would make taking the battery out a bit easier next time.

Oh yeah, and what took me so long, to join, is, as that one NAVY doc(quack) from years ago told me is that I have the wallflower disease, umm said his book rofl.  But more seriously, I like to get more of a day of experience in riding so I can relate to answers and responses instead of asking questions and thinking huh?  maybe I should ride some more then understand rofl.

Kind of one of those kindred spirit things.  Have a good day all.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.
