Recent hidden damage discovered

Well, well, well,

In my quest to replace my GSE shock I removed the linkage arm to grind it a bit.

And, oh surprise, the front bearing just simply disintegrated himself in my hands when i removed the linkage arm from the bike.

I also noticed that the middle bushe (inner sleeve) didn't move at all.

After a few minutes of struggle with the beast here is the result:



Admire:
the bottom bearing damage
the center bearing missing some rollers
the top bearing quite ok

Regarding the inner sleeves, see how they are rusted and embossed...

So everything is going to be replaced... and it'll take a week to receive the parts here...

So while the bike was off the road, i decided to remove the carbs to give them a good cleaning and a thoroughtfull inspection.

And here is how I found them:


Left hand side:
lot of carbon deposit
needle ok
spring ok
washer: original (plastic) and ok

right hand side:
no carbon deposit
needle ok
spring: broken....
washer: metal not original

So I'll have to wait to receive a set of carbs won on ebay to replace both springs and small washer.

I have an old style lingage arm (circa 89'-91' )  I can post pics later.

I'll trade you for your carbs (if your gonna replace em anyway)

I really appreciate the offer.
But since I'm located in ireland, shipping will worth more than the parts themselves... and I've already  ordered the bearings and sleeves...

However, I'll be very interested by the pic of your linkage arm since i found out I'll have to grind mine since the shock i bought has a short clevise (and the one on the bike has a long one)

I read your thread about the short clevise, and figured I had what you need.  Too bad your on the other side of the pond.
I bought a bunch of random spare Gs500 parts a while back. comes in handy when your rebuilding GS's. I have 3 bikes sitting in the carport.

My linkage arm is one piece but composed of 2 sheets on the side and a horizontal tube in the middle

yeah, expected damage
at least ya'll on that right side of the pond usually service the suspension
i'd bet 9 out of 10 on the left side of the pond never get re lubed....ever
re lube the steering stem brgs while ya got it down...my 2 p .... $0.02

any idea what may have cause the spring to break and the possible consequences ?
