Clutch adjustment question

Hi folks,

Quick question: I adjusted my clutch today, per all the great articles on here. Thanks! One thing I didn't see, though:

It seems most of the adjustment methods really just move the friction zone in (meaning closer to the fully-closed handle position; more free play), or out (meaning closer to the fully-open handle position; less free play). Both methods still leave a fair amount of handle travel that is outside the friction zone. What I'm wondering is whether or not there's actually a method to adjust the overall length of the friction zone, to allow it to span more of the clutch handle's entire throw.

I adjusted the clutch lever arm via the little screw and lock nut inside the small plate on the left side of the bike, but it seemed to have only the same effect as the two cable-length adjusters: moving the friction zone about but not changing it's actual throw length.

Am I missing something? Thanks.

Hi there,
The best way to do this is to:
First, completely slacken the screw-in cable adjuster at the clutch lever by turning the locknut out and then threading the adjuster all the way in to the lever mount. There should be PLENTY of cable slack now at the lever once you do that.
Next, now you adjust that screw adjuster under the engine side cover plate.
Loosen the locknut, then turn the screw in until it just contacts the shaft within, then back it off 1/4 of a turn. Now retighten the locknut while holder the adjuster screw and you are done.
Next, now go ahead and adjust the cable slack at the lever adjuster or at the lower cable adjuster that goes into the top of the crankcase to the clutch lever arm assembly that you just adjusted.
Now your clutch should be properly adjusted.
Good luck,
