I plan on installing a factory pro jet kit on my '01 GS500. I've already drilled the stock pipe a little bit but plan on waiting until the jet kit to do it more... would drilling the stock pipe be about like putting on an aftermarket exhaust? I realize that for a stage 1 an exhaust isn't really necesary but would this work?

Joris

If you install a stage 1 jet kit, drilling the exhaust pipe too much is only dangerous. You could burn down the valves. Stage 1 is made for using the stock exhaust pipe, so don`t drill too much (see my site for more details). If you install a stage 3 jet kit, you should drill more holes, because stage 3 jet kits are made for use with aftermarket high flow exhausts. But remember, the exhaust also has an inner chamber. To get an aftermarket exhaust flow, you should have to drill this chamber too (again see my site for the details, modification section=>engine related). But this should only be done in case you have a stage 3 jet kit. Good luck!

I was under the impression that Stage 1 was for stock OR modified exhaust with stock intake.

hhhmmmm, let me check.........Yup, you`re right. Sorry! You can use an aftermarket pipe also with stage 1. So oyu can drill as much as you can, but I wouldn`t drill too much. It might get to loud or could damage the valves. I checked the manual at my site:

You can read it. All the info is there. Good luck!
