sensing some nearsightedness developing in my left eye, i decided that i should look into getting glasses, at least for driving at night.  i hadnt had an eye exam for years, since before my big wreck (car).  so i get em done this evening and i waited forever in the damn office for her to give me my results.  i actually fell asleep cuz i waited like 45min.  turns out i dont NEED glasses but it would be beneficial to my night vision somewhat.  then came the important news.  apparently my optic nerve looks funny.  she said its important that i come back and get a further, in depth exam with an MD.  im like okk.. (thinkin to myself that they just want another $30 co-payment).  so i ask her.. what might that be indicative of? she says, not to worry theres a good chance i was just born with it.  im like ok then why is it so important? what else could it mean.  she looks at me and says glaucoma.  so now i gotta effing wait till april 16 (my birthday) to find out if im gonna have a license to smoke pot.

Call back and see if they are going to do an OCT or just a visual field exam.  If they are going to only do a VF ask if they could refer you to an office that has an OCT machine.  The OCT or Ocular Coherence Topographer is much better at diagnosing early stage glaucoma, where as the VF testing requires actual damage to the optic nerve head before it can detect any defects.  And if you do end up with glaucoma and don't want to go blind, stick with drops and not the pot.  Pot requires such large sustained doses that it is ridiculous to actually consider it a treatment for glaucoma.  But that doesn't mean you can't do both drops and that, right

Just my 2 cents...

I've worked for an Ophthalmologist for 7 yrs and am currently going to school to become an Optometrist.  There are several other factors, but if you have no family history of it, are caucasian or asian, and have never had any trauma to your eyes then chances are very low for your age.  And I'm not racist, glaucoma is, statistically speaking.  So I don't wanna hear it.

So here's a question. My grandmother on my Father's side was diagnosed with glaucoma about 6 years ago. That half of the family pretty much pure Irish. So I'm half Irish and half Korean, 20, no major trauma to the head.. what're my odds of having glaucoma?

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

its mainly trauma to the eyes, not head that cause it.  .. You know what the scariest thing about doing my job?  I see all the old, blind people who can't see worth a flip and can only say "you really should try to limit your driving"   Seriously.. if you only knew the percentage of people who literally could not see a motorcycle 30 ft in front of them.  The other day I had this old lady who could only see 20/80 at best with her glasses, which she didn't use to drive, then I pull out to go to lunch and there she is at the light.  She has her blinker on to turn right, she sits.. and sits.. and sits.. with absolutely no cars coming.. I could see her squinting to see if any traffic was coming.  Then as both lanes of oncoming traffic finally have cars approaching she pulls out so slowly if they didn't see here they would have probably killed her.  Its so damn frustrating.

at least the old ladies drive slow

good luck with your eye... worst case scenario, eye patches are sexy  :dunno_white:

not all old ladies drive slow... my nana drives worse than i did in high school. but she does it in an oooold crown vic. that thing will kill anything in it's path.
