Fuel Leak

This question is going to make me sound less intelligent than I am but here goes anyways....

There is fuel leaking from my 92 GS500E right near the rear brake foot lever.  There is a fuel line that runs down the side of the transmission and then right near the bottom of the frame it's capped off with a rubber boot looking thing (kind of looks like a spark plug grommet without the hole in the end for a plug wire to go through)  The very end is torn and dripping fuel.  My plan is to cut it and stick a hex bolt and worm clamp over the hose and continue riding.  I am wondering what this fuel line that seems to go nowhere but down and then stops is intended for.  It looks factory based on the clamps holding the fuel line to the bike but I have no idea what it's for.  Anybody know off the top of there head before I start looking it up?  Thanks.

It's connected to the bottom of your airbox.

There's a deliberate slit in the end to allow stuff out and not in, but it's being "torn" is not the problem,

There's also a gas can overflow right down there, though- make sure you know which one it's coming from.

I mistook the deliberate slit for a tear.  That's kind of what I was wondering. I'm out of town right now so I can't look it over but I will have to determine if it's coming from the airbox or the gas can overflow then go from there.  It was wedged between the garage wall and my truck so there wasn't much room for me to get down and trace the fuel line and I had no time to pull it out of the garage and look it over before I left home.  I just rode it the day before I noticed the leak and it was running fine so I don't know if it's problems with the floats or not.   When I get home I'll have to tear into it.  I didn't have much time before I left town and it's been bothering me.  Very helpful info thanks.

Sounds like a float issue if it is coming from the airbox drain.  As we learned in another recent "leaking fuel" post, don't forget to make sure the carbs breather tube is clear, that can hold those pesky floats open.  More than likely the carbs probably just need cleaned and or rebuilt if those float valves aren't sealing

frankcougar,

I had a similar issue recently. See here: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=33086.0
