Hey guys,
I am new to the Gs500...... I have done mods on other bikes and figured this would be a slam dunk, guess not.

My friend just sold me a 05 Gs with front end damage thats been sitting.
I have an 02 gsxr front end(complete minus upper triple, upper bearing, clip ons and mounting nuts). I was hoping on just swapping the steering stem but it looks like after i would buy an upper for the gsxr set you would not be able to put a steering stem nut on the upper triple because of the way you mount the stock gs upper triple with that little cheesy bolt.
Along with the front end i bought a steering stabilizer from the same bike, but no mounting brackets.
Also i bought a rear shock from an 05 gsxr 1000, will that work also?

Maybe im just stumped and looking at the conversion in from the wrong angle but if anyone has any experience with this setup let me know.

Thanks in advance and glad to be part of the gs community now!

hi again. dont get too discouraged, because you've got about 85% of what you need to do these mods.

i dont know of anybody that makes a steering stabilizer specifically for the gs, but they have been installed w/ custom mounting brackets made.

the front end swap shouldnt be too difficult either; there are a few different ways of going about it:
*have custom triples & stem made.
*press the GS stem into the GSX-R lower triple.
*Keep the GSX-R sem, get the correct bearings, & use spacers to make up for the difference in length.

here is a very quick overview of the process:

or you can do an advanced search of "front end" for topic subjects only, & a TON of information will come up.

good luck!

I looked at the overview  you posted about a week ago. I dont know if what year that front end is but it seems that i could press out the stem and swap it,no biggie. The problem comes from if i want to get a gsxr600 upper triple and put it on the gsxr600 forks that normally(i think, just like any other bike) there would be the top mounting nut that would be the issue . On the gs it is that little bolt that goes from the "top upper" to the "lower upper" (i think i got that right) where as in most bikes its just a nut. Also, on that step by step it shows he used the stock Gs upper. I was hoping i could just use the upper gs but #1 the gsxr fork tubes are thicker and  #2 the whole upper is wider than the GS.

I will maybe get out in the garage this weekend and if i can figure it out i will let everyone know, if not i will post some more pics, thanks !!!
