As for God being a fat white guy. I was reminded of an early biography of Cassius Clay/Mohamed Ali who as as child looked at one of his deeply christian mother's pictures of God surrounded by angels in "heaven" and noticing they were all white he asked mom where were the black angels. She told him they were all in the kitchen fixing the milk and honey.............

Theres a difference between mandated segregation and voluntary... though it may have started with the former... I went to a 1600 student high school one year and the groups were divided by race. Koreans stuck together, blacks together, etc. for the most part.

Better to mix it up and be able to mix than to huddle in groups but... what if they were effectively segregated by culture and forced to have a single prom? If the whites were a majority and voted a white princess every year then it would be a white dominated event... blacks might eventually stop going. Faced with that option seems like a dual prom would be more comfortable for all involved.

If you look at other countries like yugoslavia, iraq, rwanda, etc... politically motivated racial divisiveness is phenomenally destructive when allowed to continue to its end conclusions... I hope the tolerant people in the US in the centuries to come always outweigh the ones who like to feed the fires. Word.

I think its funny how they say it's tradition.  Like thats a good reason to continue it.

I would think at this point it is more ignorance than anything else. On both parts whites and blacks.  Voluntary segregation is still segregation, it breeds hate.

Whether they admit it or not those kids are entering an integrated world with segregated minds, BECAUSE of the schools decision to allow the parents to segregate their children.

I went to school in south Georgia.  You have your predominitely black schools and you have your predominitely white schools.  Determined by district of course   

Sometimes I get angry when I hear blacks complaining about racism in America and how white skinned people are better off here,  then sometimes stories like this come to light.  Then I wonder how situations like this mold young minds.

And perhaps fifty years from now, we'll be looking at discrimination against gays/lesbians the same way.    Seems to be awfully prevalent now, and the arguments in favor of discriminating based on sexual preference are very reminiscent of the arguments used in favor of racial segregation.  Maybe enlightenment will flower...or maybe the religious fundamentalists will institute a theocracy here as well as in the middle east.  It's the same evil no matter which location in my opinion.
