Here is a picture of what the set up is.... I'll get some better pictures later this weekend .... because I am currently painting the pipe.  Eventually when I get some freetime I will make new pipes similar to this only duals!!

Ok so I bike still is not done due to some mis-communication with the ordering of the jets     ....anyway I got some more indepth shots of the polished lips, and the finished exhaust.  Along with some other misc photos!

When I got the Buell X1 tail section, it did not have the original undertail assembly with it.  So I made one out of Lexan.... which you can buy at home depot or other place like that.  I painted the side that would make up the under-seat compartment, so there would be no paint chipping.  I also used rivets to hold it on....Its probably the most clean homemade undertail I have seen :dunno_white: and it cost me fifteen bucks :o

Keeping with the apparent buell theme?!?!?!

I happen to know the owner of a local tint shop.. where they do alot of that 3m paint protection on cars... So instead of charging me a ton of $$$$$ he showed me how to do it and hooked me up with a ton of it.      .. I have only had a chance to put it in a couple of key areas where I had problems with chipping before.

Dude. The x1 tailsection looks amazing. How much money do you have into so far? I'm interested in doing something similar.

Hang out there, we may flame, but we don't hate.

My attitude is in serious need of readjustment, and I'm ok with that.

Just to do the tail section.....
$ 180 shipped (ebay) for the aluminum tail section... I found one cheaper after I bought this one  ($100)..  There is a dedicated buell forum... www.badweatherbikers.com  if you ever want anything buell I would post here first they seem to be pretty reasonably on there classifeds page.

$40 shipped for the seat. (badweatherbikers.com)
$25 shipped for the taillight I am running. (ebay)
$15 for the Lexan (home depot)
$10  (tractor supply) for channel steel....this is what I welded to the existing gs frame....you could use whatever ... its all about imagination.
$15 for an additional sheet of lexan to make some side covers for the battery openings
on either side of the bike.
$50 for paint (NAPA)

So roughly $335.00 If I had more time to shop around....like all winter...I could have spent considerably less but....I still think its work it.

Hmm... So if I get the tail and seat, I just have to find someone to do the welding for me.. interesting.. I'll have to look into it, thanks! Got pics of the mount you fabbed?

Awesome. Sorry, didn't read the whole thread. I'm gonna look into that, as I think it looks REALLY good.

I'll try to explain this as best I can.

I chose the channel steel because it was flat on one side, which allowed it to sit more flush against the gs frame for welding yet still be rigid and strong.  This is how it worked out..... I welded the channel steel on the inside of the gs frame so it would follow the lines of the tank.  Welding on the inside worked perfectly .... because the tail section had roughly the same difference appart as the frame at this location
See here...
The red lines show how close the buell tail section and gs frame  are.... The yellow box shows the piece I welded to the frame ...and bolted to the tails section.

gstwizzle

The lower mounts worked out almost the same way.... However the lower buell tail seciton is slightly wider that the gs frame.... So I just reinforced the new steel rear subsection so that when the tailsection was tied in....it would be plenty strong.  The buell tail section was maybe between a 1/8 and a 1/4 inch wide on either side.

If anyone on here trys to do something like this I would recommend that you can cut the lower original tail section mounts completely off if you want.... However on the upper mount.... MAKE SURE that you don't cut off to much frame, because you need to keep the holes pictured below to hold the rear gas tank mounts!!!!!  On top of that YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE that you leave enough room on the remaining upper mounts to weld the needed mounts for the buell tail section.

Thanks for the tips.I would have screwed something up if I tried it.  :thumb:
PICS are GONE never TO return.

gstwizzle

I don't have any pictures of how I reinforced the new sub section but here is a rough sketch of what I did.....

The red represents a remaining chunk of the channel steel that I welded there for added strength.... The yellow above represents chunks of the original tail section was cut off .... also being used for added strength.

coming along nicely my friend.  when fully done you should do a write up and put it on the wikki.

So I haven't posted in a long while due to many reasons....mainly I finally got my bike done so I was riding it to much.  Also I'm back in school so I have no time for anything.  However due to this mild winter we have been having in NY I have actually been able to get some riding in! :o.  Anyways, I recently bought a bandit 400 wheel and an sv650 shock, that will be part of this springs mods.

I am also planning on getting the tank and front fender painted.  I just need to decide on a good color that will go well with the black and gold.
