Hi everyone...
For a number of reasons, I've ended up opening the cylinder head to check on the valves on my GS500 2003 (Europe). All OK.
I've put new gaskets everywhere, and put the distribution chain following the Climer manual (except for the part where the rotor signal RT is in front of the pickup, since it is opposite to it, I believe). See the pictures:

ignition rotor position (the LT mark goes in front of the ONLY pickup!

chain and relative positions of camshafts

Here is the position of the exhaust camshaft.

My problem is that it does not even go puff...
I use a temporary gas container, hang from the ceiling, connected to the reserve intake. The knob is put to either reserve or prime, but it makes no difference. It seems that the plugs are dry. How could I check if the problem is lack of gas to the cylinders or bad fire timing? Sparks are OK. Spark plugs are new.

Is there a trick to check the gas intake? I disconnected the vacuum hose from the carbs, and it pulsates (push-pull) air... is this normal?
I have not dissasembled the carbs, which I can feel that they contain gas if shaken carefully.

Any help is welcome, guys!
Thanks in advance!

So where is the missing left pick up?

Edit: Ooops didn't know suzuki modified the ignition on '04+ models to use one pick up only

Anyway check if there is gas in the float chambers by draining some out , check for good spark
When cranking don't use choke , hold open throttle and then crank it

Not really. Pulsating vacuum, sure, but it should never PUSH air. The intake valves are supposed to only be open on a downstroke...

Because of that, I'm guessing the valve timing is backwards for one cylinder. Haven't done that sort of work on the GS, though.

RATS!  :o
Does this mean I still have the timing out of synch?  Does anyone know the correct position of the rotor with the only pickup for the 2004+ models?

I think everything is ok with timing ,if to judge by the two pick up model,
you have R.T. mark facing where the left pick up would've been, the camshafts face properly and there are 18 pins between the camshaft marks
so recheck everything till this point and make sure there's fuel supply and spark

Thanks, Affschnozel!
I've tried everything. The carbs have fuel on them (drained OK). I feed them through a transparent plastic tube, and I can see that there is no gas feed into the carbs, though. :dunno_white:
So I guess that hey filled up by gravity, but there is no aspiration from the cylinders.
I'll give the closest Suzuki dealer a try... and keep my fingers crossed! :icon_rolleyes:

The push-pull action on the vacuum tube is quite evident. I'll post the correct advencer position for the 2004+ models, if I find that from a reliable source!

Thanks again!
