I have a 2002 GS500 can I fit a 96 Gs500 engine into my bike with a minimal amount of hassle?

Thanks....

Not sure but I think so. I don't think anything was changed.

Yeah , they will switch right out with minimal work :thumb:   Just those f%$king F models with their damn oil coolers that will make ya scratch your head a couple times

Besides the changes in the gas tank and the rear bodywork and seat, the biggest change between the 01 and later bikes and the 00 and earlier bikes is the carbs.  Keep the 3 circuit 02 carbs if you can, they are much better than the 2 circuit carbs of the 96.

The 3 circuit carbs should bolt right on to the older engine without a problem :thumb:

Should bolt on engine OK but my 97 had one throttle cable with spring return and my 02 has more common dual pull/push throttle cables.  Will require a bit of mods here to make right.

The airboots may be different between the two models.

It will bolt in...

but...

you will need to deal with the oil cooler mounting, without it you will have to deal with the additional plumbing...
the different ignition pickup (1 on the 04+ instead of 2) but swapping for a 2 pick-up should work or swap cdi along with any other electrical stuff that is not compatible...
lack of the tach drive gear (I think the hole is in the head on the '04 but remove in newer years)....
Common sense in not very common.
