Almost had my first true "down" today.

Traveling about 35mph through my quiet neighborhood.  I'm going straight and a car is "stopping" up and to my left on a perpendicular road with the intentions of taking a left handed turn to merge on the road I'm on.  He turned into my lane and forced me up over the curb, on someone's grass and then the sidewalk.  I continued on the sidewalk until I hit a driveway then got back on the road and continued my commute.

What did I do wrong?  I think everything.

1. Locked up the rear brake
2. I learned my turning signal doesn't make a sound when I hit it (duh)
3. I didn't look where my path was leading as I was more concerned with the car coming at me....if there was a tree there it would've been close.  I didn't look where I was going until the last second before hitting the curb.
4. I had a feeling he was rushing and wasn't going to stop but instead of being passive I stayed on the throttle being prepared to play "what if" he really didn't see me (i guess I did this part right).

Things Learned
1. Don't panic and rip on the foot brake
2. how to get out of a slide when your rear brake is locked up
3. Need to be more instinctual with the horn....I still can't believe I was hammering on my turning signal

4. The part that scares me the most is I wasn't really prepared even though I played "what if".  To be honest, I don't remember if I already planned my route if he turned into me or not.  I'd like to think I did but it all happened so fast I don't remember.  I feel like I mapped it out in case he turned into me and that's why I wasn't looking where I was going but I'm not sure.  Next time I feel that situation approaching I need to be sure I know where I'm going to go when he/she turns into me.
5. One cager needs some new shorts.  I think he was more shook up than I was.

All in all, a good morning on the bike.

Yeah... left turning cages from a perpendicular road... my favorite!

I treat EVERY SINGLE one as if they are going to pull out in front of me.  I've lost count of how many times people have done that to me, and that's even AFTER I've made eye contact (or thought so).  Even when I am sure people have seen me, I act like they didn't.  And if/when they do pull out in front of me, I let them know about it, big time.
