Do a search here or ask dgyver. He has alot more than a 555.
PICS are GONE never TO return.

The 555 uses 79mm pistons and they are not made anymore, 92 was the last year. 79mm is the largest you can bore the stock sleeves and they do get thin. I built a 555 several years ago, took awhile to acquire 2 pistons. I have obtained a 3rd and still looking for a 4th. In the meantime I got hold of a set of 80's which requires replacing the sleeves, which is an option. Not sure of the largest possible but 85mm have been done.

The next best is 78mm pistons. Here is the info: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=14401.0
Dang, I did not realize I posted that 2-1/2 years ago.

Megacycle reworks stock cams. Somewhere around $260. There is another company doing the same but I do not recall there name.

I wonder what the torque difference is between a 500 and a 555 cc ?

I wish I had done a dyno run before selling my 555, finacial reason prevented it. Things have changed so I eventually will do a run with my current and future builds.

fyi... the GS is actually a 487cc with 74mm pistons. Factory +1mm pistons (75mm) would be 500cc.

But...  For the cost, the time, the fabrication, the work, the worry.....

Couldn't you just get a faster bike?  I mean, I love my GS, but wouldn't it be just as easy to buy a 90s 600 or 650 and make it a Streetfighter?

Jay_wolf

Indeed , but due to stupid laws , even if i want a biker bike , im gonna have to wait about 3/4 years for insuance to get ok , i mean , i asked bout gsxr 600 , and they laughed in my face , having a 642 cc gs would be such a killing machine :P , plus im gonna use the bike as a CV for my work on it , for motorbike shops in london , 2 get a new job , D, how would i go about sourcing the Stuff for a 642?  :thumb:

Get a 2nd & 3rd job to pay for the parts that you would have to fabricate and replace, especiallly the broken cranks. To make it effective you would be best to do a 4-valve head swap as well. I will not go into the details on that unless someone is serious about spending the money and all the time required for the fabrication. Read the article about Cedric's CSXR. Heck, people whine about the $300-400 cost of installing the 78mm pistons for the 541. The only way to do something cheap is to slowly acquire parts at a good price when they become available, this may take several years. Most of the work would be on your part of would you could find to fit and what you would need to fabricate. There is not a single source for this information.

your making the 541 sound good , im willing to pay for the costs for that , not a problem , so i read your post on it , so id need a machinest , to mill the heads , and fit the new Pistons ? i want my gs to be the Badest Gs on british soil ,  :thumb:

Just boring the cylinders to fit the pistons is the minimum required. Some additional gain is possible with milling the head.

Ill speak to the machinist today , and see what he recons he would charge , thanks D  :thumb:

gsJack

Way back in the beginning of time (gs time:-), V & H built up a 555cc Wiseco piston GS500 that was covered in the Aug 89 Cycle World.  They installed about $1250 (retail price) worth of parts and the result was a GS500 with EX500 performance.  Now in 2007, the Ninja 500 aka EX500 MSRP is even less than that of the plastic coated GS500 MSRP.

Think I'd just change my name to exJack if I sought that rather modest level of performance increase.   :thumb:

Quarter mile and top speed figures were given but no dyno traces shown.  HP and Torqued were reported to be about 10% greater than stock on the V & H GS500:
