Tachometer spazzing out intermittently on my GS500F

Out of nowhere, the tachometer will suddenly start "twitching" up 1000RPM or so, usually every couple of seconds but totally random. For example, I'll be cruising down the highway at 5000RPM and the tach will suddenly "twitch" to 6k and back down again as fast as the needle damping mechanism will allow it. It always twitches upwards, and not just at one particular RPM.

How does the electric tach on the GS500Fs work? Does it count pulses, read a voltage, or something else? Sorry, I'm good with electrical stuff but new to motorcycles. I'd think if it was a loose/broken connection the tach would go down, not up. The only thing I can think of is water getting inside of something and shorting it out intermittently. Any ideas?

lube the cable.  It's usually a case of the cable binding up in the sleeve and bouncing around when the tension breaks.

nevermind...it's an F...odds are you have a loose connection somewhere and it's arcing.  Check your grounds and terminals.

Yeah, F is electric.

Pull your gauges and tighten down the screws holding the three wires on the back of the tach. Problem solved, probably.

If that doesn't work, do a barrel roll.
