Maybe I'm still tired or sleepy but I don't get the point of the article. . . .the teacher doesn't like to leave tips in a tip jar?  But he has a tip jar for his son in his room for when he does extra stuff. . . hmmm. .. ..yeah I'm confused.

I tip 15% at resturaunts, for basic service, crappy service they are getting 10% or less depends on how crappy.  Great service I usually tip at 20%.  Valet parking / washroom things like they they get a couple of bucks.

Even if the voices aren't real they have some good ideas.

Kev tried to tell me months ago..that because he worked for his fathers store and he "helped" people with their electrical stuff...he should get tips..he couldn't grasp the concept of gratuity.

He is speaking more about tips for "non service" jobs. I agree with him. I tip at the restaurant and bars etc... but to tip the cashier at Walmart? or the grocery store ??? WHY? Their job is not "tip" oriented. In restaurants and bars most employees are paid a lower wage in anticipation of tips. The grocery store doesn't do that.

Funny related story:

About 10 years ago I was the manager at a record store and one day a lady bought a $2 CD single. She gave me a $20 and told me to "keep the change"  :icon_mrgreen: That was VERY strange ??? Never happened before or again in my 2 years there. I never saw her again either  :dunno_white: I remember one of my new employees standing next to me was like " Damn! I never get tips. I said.. No? I do all the time  :icon_mrgreen:

 He is prob. the one who started this Tip Jar craze

I don't tip anyone making at least minimum wage unless they really impress me.  Like th bagger at United...if he can pack $100 worth of groceries in a single bag in a way that doesn't damage anything, then hauls it to my car and has it stacked neatly in the trunk or back seat before I have time to even really help, he gets a couple bucks.

The chick at Sonic who effectively delivers two #1 Sonic burgers, a supersonic bacon cheesburger, three popcorn chicken things, 6 orders of fries, 6 large drinks and brings enough ketchup and sauce to keep me from having to push the little red button...again...all while wearing roller skates on piss-poor concrete and asphault gets a couple bucks.

The badass waiters/waitresses get 15% or more.

My last waitress at Olive Garden got two wire ties and a paper clip.

edit:  i'll add that one time at Starbucks, while they weren't looking, I emptied their "tip jar" into their Ronald mcDonald House jar...I do it all the time at gas stations.  it amazes me that I see tip jars at privately owned gas stations operated by white hillbillies all the time...but I never saw one at a station owned by a middleeastern feller or a black feller.  Tip jars at places that pay minimum wage, at least, to all their employees piss me off.

I just now realized that I have never once been to a gas station owned and operated by a mexican feller...

Honestly..if my teachers in high school impressed me enough and i had any money back then..i would have tipped them...in college..f%$k that..they make more than 3 times what my parents make in a year...but the high school teachers all made about 40k a year..and had put up with a lot of of shaZam!..

I love this idea.

And I agree with Mak...  non-service oriented jobs do NOT warrant a tip of ANY amount...

...that being said...  I sometimes help out in the retail store bringing somewhat large items to customer's vehicles.  It's a courtesy.  It's the right thing to do....

It's the ONLY thing to do when the customer is a really cute girl...

Anyway... Most of the time, the customer wants to tip me for helping them out.  I always decline, but I thank them for the gesture.  Makes me feel good that my services have made someone happy.

Where is the WTF vote?  :dunno_white:

A lady that I grew up around has a well off husband. He owns a fairly large landscape biz.She has never supported anything in the community. Not even the schools that helped raise her rotten ass kids. She recently came down with cancer. They have very good insurance.Every where I go I see quart size mason jars with a pitiful pic of her on it.The caption says,"Please Help Mrs.Lou.She has cancer and can't pay her bills."When I saw this,I wanted to throw the damn thing on the floor. She is the nastiest and meanest old woman I ever met.She ain't got no family or friends to help her, that's how mean she is.Her children have disowned her.So when I see a tip jar asking for money,I slip a piece of paper in with my tip.My tip is,If you're going to beg for money do it face to face,or do a doughnut fund raiser.Krispy Kreame is down the street and will help you.Sh!t pi$$ me off.

Well, I work as a server at Applebee's and I hate crappy tippers. I make $2.15 per hour plus tips. Which admittedly ends up working out very well. I am good at what I do, and really enjoy making good money for doing a good job. When I get these ingnorant customers that just don't know how to tip, I feel like finding out where they work and going in and making thier day of work a pain, just to show them somewhat how I felt by giving them the best service I could and getting nothing in return.

I've worked as a server and some people never got the concept of tips. I wanted to wear a big pin that said "I only make $2.13 a hour" but my manager wouldnt let me, I dont think some people get it. I used to work at a hotel making above min. wage and my job included driving to the airport to pick up people (get their luggage also) business travelers would normally tip they were easy to spot. People coming into town for cousin whoevers wedding never would. And it was always these people that would expect the shuttle to take them ALL over town, I even had one woman ask if I could wait while she bought groceries.  Did I work off tips? NO. But did I deserve something for my effort? I dunno, but it sure would of been nice.

Here in oregon they have to pay at least $7.80 an hour. Most people are actually paying above that too, plus tip. so they are doing ok. my friend works at a restaruant and makes like 25 an hour or more with tips.
