Hello everyone,

I recently bought a '99 GS500 and am already impressed with how it rides. :)  However, I'm having issues with the engine RPMs.  Today, I took it out for a ride and after about 30 miles, I stopped at a red light and the engine revved and stayed at approx. 3000 RPMs.  I revved it a couple of times and it would not drop.  It did this several times through town.  Fast forward to later that day; I went back through town and it behaved (stop at light and RPMs were about 1500).  Overall performance is great; not doggy, has peppy acceleration.  Any ideas?  Has anyone had the same problem?  The PO said the carbs were cleaned out.  I appreciate any feedback.

Is the choke sticking on?  Check to see that the plungers on the carbs are returning to the fully-in position when turning off the choke.  Also, the throttle cable or linkage could just be sticking.  Check to see that it returns freely and lube everything up with a light oil for good measure.

I've had that problem occaisionally.  It only happens after a long stretch when the engine is warm.  If I leave it idle long enough, it drops to 1500 rpm, so I don't worry about it.

i would have to agree on checking the choke .   I had a problem  like this a couple of months after i bought mine.  I f i let the engine warm up longer before i but a load on it  i didnt have any problems if i just hopped on it  then there were issues.  I ended up have to tear the carbs down do to other issues but after doing that   i no longer had the problem.

Had that same problem on my 97 GS500 and think it must be common for bikes thru 2000 before change to new carbs in 01.

I just came to a stop and turned the idle down very slowly till rpm's dropped to normal.  Repeated if necessary.  Found good idle speed setting it that way.  Easy to adjust idle speed while sittung on bike once you know where the knob is.

I'm thinking of this right now because we are having a real warm streak with temps averaging around 90F for a week or so.  All four of my previous Hondas would run much stronger in the cool of the evening than they did mid afternoon on these hot days.  The 97 GS was so lean it was noticeably just opposite of the Hondas,  would run strongest in the mid day heat than it did in the cool of the evening.  Really should have rejetted the 97 GS, the 02 doesn't need it.

407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.
