Fuel Type and Consumption

Hey I'm a total noob and I've bought a '92 GS 500E. I've been reading stuff on the type of fuel for the GS. It was an american site I think that said that they're designed for 87 octane and putting any fuel with a higher rating was just a waste of money. Our normal unleaded seems to be about 91 octane and the premium about 98 octane. I thought I'd get better consumption with the premium and tried about three tanks but it did'nt seem to make any difference. I still get about 5L/100km ( I weigh a fair bit though).

What does any one else reckon about the best fuel type? and how does 5L/100 kms stack up?

cheers

The US fuel rating isn't directly comparable to ours, so their 87 is not less than our 92.

That said, the economy on my GS is around 4.5L/100km, it usually varies between 4-4.7L100km. Best I've had is 3.6L/100km, never gone over 5L/100km. I've run it on 92, 96 and 98 RON fuels. The engine is in such a low state of tune that it'll run on anything resembling petrol, so 92 will suffice. I usually fill up with 96 for shits and giggles.

I run 95 in mine and always from the same servo as well, except for when I'm out of town.

I'm getting on average 5L/100, sometimes a touch over, sometimes a touch under. On the run back from Wyangla the other weekend, I got around 4.8L/100 and this was really giving it to the bike. I was sitting on around 120 up to 140 at times and really giving it the berries on the back roads into Orange.

I also have my bike jetted rich & I'm running a K&N lunchbox air filter & a bigger can.

I'm glad this thread came up as I've been wondering a little about my fuel consumption and how it compared to others. I'm not complaining about it, cause a tank of fuel will usually last me a fortnight of running to work and is a hell of a lot cheaper than running the car.
The more I learn about women, the more I love my bike.

Hey, thanks heaps guys. So it seems that 5L/ 100 km is reasonable and I'll just go with the standard octane rating.

Hi all,
I am getting  an average of 3.8 to 4.2ltrs per  100kms, no mods just as is, just using straight unleaded, and try to use from the same servo too. (2006 model, 10 mths old, 26400kms)
