Front brake - doesn't feel right

Hey Guys,

I went on a rather long ride today - After about two hours, i noticed my front brake started to feel a bit funny... Every time I gave the lever a pull, it felt and sounded like behind the lever I was pushing/grinding sand... Ok, so the sensation felt a bit like those stress balloons full of sand... when you squeeze them, the feeling and sound it makes... that's the best way I can describe it... It's odd that it just started half way through my ride.

I checked the pad (plenty of material left), disk (fine), brake line (admittedly, haven't changed it since new - 2004) and reservoir (within spec)... I bled the whole system late last year and it's been about 4000KM of no problems.

The bike still stops perfectly fine with no 'grabby' feeling... Any suggestions? Should I just bleed it? Something more serious maybe?

Could there be sand caught where the brake lever pushes the master cylinder?

I don;t know about your situation but my front and rear brake are squeeling more then..well ever...I checked the pads and they seem fine..but is it the dust or large particals stuck in the pad?

yeah i just had this problem... mine sat in the rain at work one day:/ but the brake fluid holds water... just bleed it and put new in and should be fine.. worked for me

try using a can of compressed air to clean off the dust...only thing i can think of

The bike is clean overall ... no dirt, dust around the break parts that i can see... Qute possible some water got in there, it was raining lightly throughout the day...  i'll go ahead and bleed the brake tomorrow and see how it goes. thanks guys

I have had this problem, got the dealer to change fluid , the mechanic told me that there was deposits in the M/C and I should consider a rebuild kit (forget correct terminology, it changes the insides) or get a new one.

most will probably suggest to upgrade to a brembo, price wize its probably a better option than buying a new oem

Time to grease the pivot.  10mm wrench to take off the nut underneath, and a screwdriver to hold it, and then spin it out.  Remove the brake lever, and grease the bolt/pivot.  Smear a liitle on top and underneath the lever, where it slides inside the pivot perch.

What other bike's front brake fits to the Gs's telescop instead of the factory brake?

Yeow, this seems to be a standard question - someone posts their carbs are this and that, and somone else asks for better carbs, then wheel, then brakes ...
The brakes on a GS almost are the best with 1 disk that you can buy. Water in the fluid pivots and pins needing cleaning greasing ... that is all they need except pads and disks. Agreed it seems to eat pads and disks OK I'll give you that. But 1 drilled disk means that is inevitable.

Squealing is caused by the BACK of the pad vibrating against the piston, I have some black greasy crap left over from a recent brake job on my car that I am going to try on mine, I will post if it stops my squealing. Permatex also makes a product called "Disc Brake Quiet", you spray it on the back of the pads and it does the same thing.

UPDATE: I removed the pads in the rear and saw that they have a thin metal shim behind them just like my Honda car that I just done a front brake job to this weekend. So I took some of the leftover black goo (Molykote M77) and put a thin layer on the side of the shim that touches the pad, then I smeared a very small amount in a circle where the shim made contact with the piston on the other side. For the first time since new...

NO SQUEALING FROM THE REAR BRAKES!!!!
