Although I never got into opera, I could always recognize both him and his voice instantly, which kind of says a lot.

I hate to see anyone die of cancer.

RIP
On those days when life is a little too much and nothing seems to be going right, I pause for a moment to ponder the wise last words of my grandfather:  "I wonder where the mother bear is?"

I'm not a fan but I used to hear him a lot because my grandpa used to always play him a lot.  I'm sure my grandpa is going to be upset.

Way back in 1984, I was living in the Dallas area and working as a free-lance classical trumpeter while teaching and attending grad school.  I played regularly as an extra and substitute trumpet with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and played in the Lyric Opera Orchestra each summer.  I got hired that summer of 1984 for what turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of my musical life.  The republican national convention was held in Dallas that year, and one of the things they decided to do was book a concert by Luciano Pavarotti.  I got hired to play in the orchestra for that concert.

The concert was held in Reunion Arena, to a sold-out audience of approximately 19,000 people.  Pavarotti was incredible.  He was only slightly past his prime (which meant he was still one of the best ever) and had the audience wrapped around his little finger.  He did NINE encores and could have done nineteen -- he finally quit coming out at the end even though the audience was standing and clapping for five minutes or more, even after the whole concert and all those encores.  It was and is one of the most electric and thrilling musical events I have ever had the privilege to be a part of.

The world has lost a great musical talent.
