Hey,
Some of you might know that I'm on a search for my first bike and I would like to run a potential seller's VIN #. Do I call the DMV or what?

Thanks

Local DMV.It only cost if you get the report. If you just ask if a specific VIN has a loan or wreck on it shouldn't cost.At least that's the way my county DMV handled me when I bought my mc.

what are you trying to find out? Who owns it or vehicle history? If its vehicle history then dont even bother because bikes that get enough damage to have a claim put against them are usually salvaged titled. Carfax is worthless when it comes to motorcycles and some vehicles. Remember that certain parts are cheap for motorcycles. You arent going to be able to tell about the 20mph lowside the previous owner had from a car fax report.

+1 again

I have a truck that was rolled over and then repaired. No history report will have this info on my truck.I had liability insurance only and fixed the truck myself.BTW my truck is an 2001 Ford Ranger,so it's not like a 15+ year old vehicle. Also, the police worked the wreck. My G/F pulled over on the side of the road and the road broke, rolling the truck upside down in a river. The river had washed away the ground under the shoulder of the road.My G/F just happen to be in the right place at the wrong time.We tried to sue the coal company that maintains the road but no dice.

I just wanted to find out if it was hot, tis all.
Local DMV told me they would need me to bring the bike down and have it inspected...

does the "owner" have a title? What state are you in? In california you can call the dmv's 800# helpline and they will tell you if its hot and if its owned by the said owner.

The owner said that she hasn't received the title yet :cookoo:
I think I'm just going to buy a brand new 2007 and stop worrying about shady people.
