I just love asking for advice here, but this may be my last. I've agreed to sell my gs to a guy
who is picking it up tonite. He's acted like  he's a rider, and knows bikes, but I can tell he doesn't know a thing.  The bike is going cheap because of a left carb problem, and a one-year expired registration.
He implied that he's going to come get it..   his friend is gonna drp him off here tonite. I think he's stupid to ride it home; it nee it needs to be trucked to his house or to a mechanic.

I haven't ridden it since the carb problem, 'cause I don't want to mess up the valves  (some backfiring).
I only start it in the morning to keep it running overall.
I made that clear to him, even offered to help him truck it home.

Anyway, it's none of my business, right? He rides it home, he messes up the engine, or it gets worse on the way home,  or it conks out and he kills the battery by cranking it over and over ...
(this has all happened to me over the years)...  and with licence plates a year old?  Get pulled over much?

I just know he's going to take it on the freeway to Pasadena..  say goodbye to a good, low-mileage engine!

I have emailed my concern to him..  but it's none of my business, right?

ABSOLUTNATI

Agree. As long as you let him know, it's his problem then.

dgyver

As along as you have disclosed any known problems, it becomes his responsibility once he purchases the bike.
Common sense in not very common.

The way I handle a sale is to write out 2 receipts, one for the buyer and one for me. On each I write a description of the bike inc` colour and the VIN and reg number, date of sale, amount paid, MOT and road tax details my name and address and the buyers name and address. I also include the term..."Sold as seen with no gaurantee" then we both sign them.
It may be different in the USA but over here private sellers of motor vehicles are under no obligation to disclose major faults...caveat-emptor and all that. By signing the receipt the buyer accepts your terms and has no comeback if the bike throws a big-end or catches fire 30 mins after he bought it from you.

it could just be he is not familiar with the gs or has not been on a bike in a while or a combination of both

I agree, get a bill of sale (with the date and time of sale). one for him one for you. That way if he wrecks it on his way home you can prove he bought it and wasn't taking it for a test ride ect... ie your not liable...

I've been busted! Seems my buyer has read these posts!
D'oh!
Anyway, I wasn't concerned so much with liability issues as much as I was worried he might
slightly damage an otherwise good engine, and then he'd be flat out of luck.
But he came tonight, and bought it, and rode away.
I hope it gets him home, and he gets it set right, and has fun with it. Riding on one cylinder sucks.

He's not an idiot, like someone here suggested, just young. Like I was, about 5 years ago.

Happy riding, everyone. I'm moving to Mexico.
