Throttle Problems

Throttle doesn't seem real smooth when starting off. It goes from idle and then Jumps up to like 4500rpms. I even tried just leaving it in neutral and barely pulling the throttle back. and it does nothing at first...and without pulling the throttle back any more out of nowhere Shoots up to 4500rpms. It's a little scary starting off like that and if I don't give it enough gas it just dies but I if I give it any gas it seems like too much. I may just need to adjust the throttle cable or something. I made sure to let it warm up and I adjusted the carbs for proper idle. Any suggestions?

4000 rpm is not that bad for starting. actually GS barely wants to ride below 4000. anyways you should be able to control it better, so something is wrong here.
unfortunatelly I don't know what, just be patient and some GS master will eventually reply :)

I don't think it was returning to idle rpms very fast either. If I revved it up and then let off the throttle it didn't go back down to idle very quickly. Is that normal?

thats a carb problem most likely. have you cleaned them try some seafoam and if that doesn't work you'll have to take them off and crack them open. or the carbs could have a loose connection to the cylinder head. I had the high idle problem, does it jump to 4500 and stay there? if so the answer for me was getting the correct size jets in there. I also had the hanging idle problem, meaning it didn't want to return to idle after rolling on the throttle. the answer for that was rechecking and sealing the carb boots on the cylinder.

good luck.

this is probably why your having trouble, bike ran like a top when i had it, an ran fine when ur buddy took it for a test ride.  carbs were went thru extensinely by a local racer buddie of mine, he definetly knows his stuff.

Yeah I think my friend was thinking there was slack in the throttle cable and he adjusted it at the carbs...but I think it was really just a little play in the grip and not actually in the throttle cable. Whatever happen it was revving way to low initially, so I just brought it back up. When I take it to the Suzi dealer to get it inspected I'll just ask if they tell me what's up. It could be running perfectly normal and I just don't know what I'm doing since I've never ridden a bike before. Sucks, I have to wait til Nov. 11th to take my MSF class. I think I'll pick up my permit and ride it around alittle before then though.
