I believe that is a mid 80's GSX400, which was not available in the US. With angled exhaust ports, the exhaust header may hit the GS500 frame. Also being a 400cc motor, the valves may be too small for an additional 100cc motor.
Common sense in not very common.

Compression may be to low with that much space over the piston.Power would go down.
PICS are GONE never TO return.

Actually, if you look at the angle view of the combustion chambers, the 4v head chamber is much shallower than the 2v, compression would go up by a significant amount assuming the dome on the GS500's piston didn't hit first.

It also looks like there is enough room there for a good welder/machinist to straighten out the exhaust ports.

Getting the head to fit and clear the pistons is only half of the problem. What about the timing chain and cam-sprockets? Has the OP actually managed to pull this "Transplant" off?

If I had the money and time I'd give it a try.

Was just having a look at a pic of a GSX 400 motor and noticed the case covers look the same as the GS and the pics you show all seem to show a very close relationship to each other this would have to be a much easier conversion then loping 2 cylinders off a GSX1100 head or which ever ones they use and considering both bikes were around at the same time I would find it very hard to believe that Suzuki went to the trouble of designing 2 different bottom ends for bikes of similar displacement.
With a little work I think the conversion could work, but with bigger valves and port work. :thumb:

I had one of them engines years ago
yeah it will work
only issue is the exhaust ports
two valve csa is smaller than 4 valve csa
just need a set of FJ pistons....and the 400 might have a diff wrist pin diam and something else might work better

lizard 84 in WV  has it now, for his vintage racer

i found it 14 yrs ago took 8 yrs to pry it out of the guys fingers and sold it 3-4 yrs ago

If a GSX400 head, complete, could be sourced... I'd be interested in one... :P
