Fitted an alarm with remote starting and immobiliser on the GS and it works great, I can start or stop the bike from 500 yards away,no key requierd, it took me about an hour to fit (mostly removing body work) and the best part is the alarm only cost like £15 that's like $30 bucks, lol.

Why a remote starter? I see no purpose except for bling. The choke has to be set correctly and the bike has to be in neutral. To each their own.
Common sense in not very common.

Pure bling !!! lol, ( choke in the morning, or when its cold, but its not just starting, you can allso stop the bike if you se it being stolen, besides nothing wrong with a bit of bling, lol and it has a fully functioning alarm, in the package, and that alone as to be worth 30 bucks, right

I have an alarm too. How did you omit choke and side stand start locking system?? (you know - you have to pull the clutch in and close the side stand in order to start the bike)
You could leave the bike on a center stand or in neutral but what about the clutch??
cheers

I think the clutch/side stand starting thing is only on US models.  At least the half a dozen different UK GS500's I rode while learning didn't have that feature.

Garethbourne

Brought the bike as a stolen recovered, it had also been damaged, head light clocks and ignition all ripped out, so no longer need the clutch lever pulled in to start the bike, (the bike still won't start if the side stand is down and the bike is in gear) there is no ignition switch any longer and hence no key, as such, as the alarm remote now turns on the ignition and starts the bike, but sadly you still need to firstly apply the choke when first started if it is cold, so all I do is apply the choke at the end of the day, so it is all ready for starting in the morning, (not forgetting not to leave in gear) that way you get to warm up the bike with out the need of getting cold yourself, lol.

I know i am going of the subject a little but as i said i brought the bike as a stolen recovered, it had also been damaged, head light clocks and ignition all ripped out, it also had clip-on bars and one was bent, so I added renthol bars and some risers, but the risers wouldn't allow the bars to sit in them as the front forks have preload adjusters on them and had to push the forks lower in the yokes, so now the front end is about one inch higher, so I could do with some risers that lean back a little so I can pull the fork legs back up, and reduce the height, something like the risers on a 535 Virago, don't suppose anyone on here as anything like that ?

Who makes that instrument gauge cluster? It's pretty sweet!

A company called (TrialTech) cost me £100 that's about 200 bucks, US it works fine,

FYI on my 06 I can start on the side or center stand, no issue.  It does need to have the clutch held under all starting.  If I am on the sidestand and put it in gear the engine cuts out.

The side stand switch is normal for all US bikes, probably for other markets as well. It is not safe starting a bike in gear while on the side stand and then it lurches forward falling off the stand.

No need to pull the clutch on my 93 GS to start it up, but you are right about the side stand and it being in gear, the bike must be in Neutral befor the motor will turn over.
The alarm is wired to a permanent live it then as one wire that connects to what would be the first position on the ignition switch, and another wire that connects to the low tension positive side of the starter relay, so once the start button is pressed twice on the remote, it puts power to the ignition and sends power the starter relay and cranks the motor, hence no key, then if you press the arm button on the remote it kills all power and arms the alarm.

...assuming the engine is warm and needs no choke?

yeah, thats about the top and bottom of it, lol,
Put something simular on my Drifter, last year, but that one cast me quite a bit more money than the alarm i got for the GS.

Know what ya mean, my 1200 Bandit was like that, (clutch in or no start) you can bridge the switch on the cutch to stop that from happening

Safety devices featured on mine, too (Italian market)
Clutch switch, sidestand switch and neutral switch, all of them up & running. :thumb:
I think it's the same for the whole EU market.

Like these GenMar risers, perhaps?
