NEVER leave your bike parked with only the steering lock engaged.
It's just not enough.
Watch this video then this other one.

First thing to buy before the motorcycle itself is a big fat chain and lock ,it's like he was asking for trouble ...

Shame that after having this guy filmed they never found him  :2guns:

20 minutes worth of 'work' and he makes a few grand off parting it out. The cops frequent motorcycle shops around here to check VIN's. I'd hate to be the guy with a stolen ride in his shop. :(

Think of all those track bikes, all those enclosed trailers, and all those windowless white vans.

I came out of the DMV yesterday to find a white van (windowless of course) parked next to mine. Felt a little sick to my stomach, hopped on and road out. Treated her to a couple wheelies for staying where I put her ;)

The owner obviously questioned the security or safety of his bike. Why else video it sitting there? If you are that concerned about someone stealing it, secure it better. Not too difficult to attach a big cable and secure it. A cover helps a lot too. The harder it is to steal the less likely it will happen.
Common sense in not very common.

Can't recall where I got it,but I use a big ass cable lock thats coated in plastic. It has a four digit combination. The cable is about 1/2 inch thick.and at least 36'' long.
I run it threw the front wheel and attach it on top the gas tank. :thumb:
Well, either you're part of the problem, part of the solution,...

disk lock is my safety net.   especially during bike week and biketoberfest.....

Someone correct me if im wrong but didnt someone find a thread from the sv forum and post it here on how to hook up an old cell phone with gps and hide it on the bike so that it can be tracked if stolen?

simon79

+1 on theft insurance.
You can use all the devices in the world, but if a thief (a professional guy, at least) really wants your bike/car/whatever, he's gonna get it sooner or later. :2guns:
I'm confident on my slow, unappealing GS not being a magnet for thieves. :icon_mrgreen:

BTW, Nate, I remember that old post too. It was annguyen to put it on this forum IIRC. :thumb:

I was relying on that too, but last night has set me straight. They broke the steering lock, bending the bars and twisting the forks in the process, then they dropped it and ran off. It's at the shop now being assessed and I'll hear the bad news (£££'s) in a few days.

A ground anchor and BIG chain are now on my shopping list for when I get the bike back. Unless anyone knows where I can buy a couple of those gatling gun automatic sentries like they used in Aliens...

If you buy a big-a$$ed cable and lock, how do you carry it around when you are riding?

True, most locks and such are just deterrents to thieves, but they do make the thieves' job harder, so they will move on to someone else's bike.  :icon_rolleyes:
Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Bloody f#$%ing hell. :o
Sorry mate.
Almost for sure they were unprofessional thieves looking for a joyride on a new bike, IMHO.
A professional guy would hardly target a GS, and even then, he'd do a clean and quick job.

I hope the damage is not too much £££, I do feel your pain. ;)
Cheers

if someone steals, or attempts to, your gs its a pretty clear indicator you live someplace poor as it gets.
