Ok i have a problem my bike runs and goes but for some reason even when i ease the gas it gives me a jerk.

I feel like i'm riding on a bi polar bull

it can't make up its mind if it wants to go or stop.

When i come to a stop and downshift sometimes the whole engine shuts off and i have to switch my petcock to PRI  :cry:

This blows and also i don't know if this is any concern but i'll post it anyways i found a screw missing on the engine and stuff comming out of it



i guess that is a concern if anyone knows what this is please let me know ASAP

The missing bolt is from starter motor cover and the residue is from the drive chain fling off I guess .

Are your valves in check?

I did a bunch of stuff, and don't really remember what the main fix was, but it would be all good maintenance stuff to do.

First, get NGK spark plugs, use some SeaFoam in the gas tank.  Make sure the battery is good and fully charged.  Rejet to a 40 pilot instead of the 37.5, let it warm up completely before riding, and REV HIGHER!  This bike bogs and just doesn't like to have the clutch let out at low RPM's.  If you rev it up to say 4-5 k before letting out the clutch (slowly), the bike will run like it's supposed to.  I generally cruse around 5-5.5k.  Hope some of this helped.  Are you new to riding?  Are you new to this bike?  These bikes have some quarks about them, but once you get used to them, you totally forget about them.

If I remember correctly I think it was the spark plugs that were my biggest problem.  I had cheap Champions and they were crap.  I switched to NGK's and 90 percent of the problem was gone.

Watch it for reference of tools needed and the effort if you plan to do the check yourself, it's not that complicated  :thumb:

The jerking problem might be related to improper valve clearances but check everything else before doing that  :thumb:

yes i'm new to this bike and yes this is my first bike :-D learning how to maitain my bike in a working condition

UPDATE: my stalling out problem is gone when i put my petcock on reserve but if i leave it on RUN it will stall when i down shift.
             
             also if get this jerk when i shift up dunno if thats normal

I'm fairly new to riding and this bike as well.  This forum will help a ton with all your problems.

I'm not sure if this could have anything to do with it, but make sure your gas lines are all properly ran.  All the diagrams can be confusing.  I found out that my Reserve and Run were switched from the previous owner.

Also, It may not seem like you are low on gas, but if the bike starts to studder, and it's better when it's on prime or reserve, then you are probably low on gas.

(Mine studdered and I would switch to Reserve and it wouldn't do anything, because my hoses were switched, but switching to prime worked)

How old is the bike, and how many previous owners have there been?

actually when i coast in low gear then accelerate hard on run my gas will go stop go stop go stop then stalls. and i'll mayb ego and stop for like 3 secs
and bam! stall

How old is the bike, and how many previous owners have there been?

lets see its a 1998 with only 16,300 miles on it i believe it had 3 previous owners. i haven't check the lines yet and don't know how too lol

I know it sounds stupid, but check the gas level.  You may think you have plenty, but the same thing happend to me.  Wouldn't hurt to fill her up and see if that helps.

it's pretty easy to check the lines...it'll help you get familiar with the bike also.  There are 2 lines coming off the tank petcock that go into the frame petcock.  Find a parts fitch for the area of the bike, like from bikebandit.com or something and follow the lines to make sure they are going to the right places.  From the frame petcock, there's another line that goes to the carbs, that one should be fine...it's a vacuum line.  Wouldn't hurt to double check to make sure it's snug on both ends too.

I hope you fixed all the damage from your crash ,I just ran through your posts and you said that before that you had similar issues

To me it sounds like improper float height in the carburetors

I think that there's a parts fitch for those lines floating around out there that is incorrect, and another that is very confusing, so it might be good to find a few to compare and make sure you're doing it right.

As always with previously owned bikes/cars you also get issues PO's never bothered to solve  :icon_confused:

I suggest you to deal with carbs first ,there are plenty HowTo's and many posts on cleaning/adjusting

i was runnin on reserve okay becuz it was using reserve gas

but i when i put run it was bone dry lol
