Hey everybody-

After 1200 miles and dropping it once or twice.. i actually crashed the bike. I was out in the canyons, on a really straight road incidentally, and a friend in front of me slammed on the brakes to make a right turn. I must have figured that i could match the braking power of his mv agusta, but i was wrong. Instead of doing the logical thing and going into the opposing lane (which was clear), I reached down and pulled that front brake too hard. The front locked up, and the next thing i knew i was looking at the blue sky and watching my bike slide across the asphalt into said friends MV. It only hit his tire and he didnt go down, but my bike is not in the best shape. I was wearing my best gear, a dainese 2 peice leathers with matching gloves and race boots, as well as a full face lid. The leathers took the damage, especially the gloves and boots,  and i walked away without a single scratch and only a couple of bruises. I couldnt ride it home because of a snapped clutch lever. So the worst damge is as follows:

1. Left fairing shredded pretty well- need to be replaced
2. left front mirror snapped off- need a new one
3. Clutch lever and left  bar end off, with scartches to the left handlebar switch.
4. Fuel tank bashed in where either my arm or chest hit it, but looks repariable as there are no scratches and it never touched the road.
5. front left turn signal in functional but bad shape
6. left footpeg and shifter bent and some rubber is off.. but i could probably just hammer those into place.
7. Centerstand foot-contact pad is shorn off completely, so if i dont want to impale my foot i should probably get a new one.

There is cosmetic damage to the engine cover and other parts , but i can live with that. I would really appreciate help as to where to get/ which ones to buy.. etc.
Thanks guys, and if my thread is repeating another one, please let me know.

Sorry to hear about your wreck  but glad you thought to wear your gear and it saved your skin :thumb:

As far as the parts, you might be able to find some of them (turn signal, mirror maybe) here if someone has taken their stock parts off for aftermarket.  I'd say go naked instead of worrying about new fairings :icon_twisted: and maybe take off the centerstand - if you need it for maintenance and it's still usable, you can just get a long bolt or rod and install it when you want it, unless you use it on a regular basis.

I wouldn't go hammering on the shifter - maybe heat it and bend it slowly - or else you risk a broken shifter...  I'm also not sure about the footpeg; is it the bracket that's bent or the mounting point?

Good luck

Mirrors, barends, and levers are always being upgraded by people, so you can buy new OEM replacemenst for next to nothing, buy someone's bent used ones for next to nothing, or upgrade to anodized pretty stuff for hundreds.

You dinged the tank with your arm or chest? Crap. Leave it as is. It impresses the chicks. Tell em it was your pee pee though.

Signals are always upgraded by people. I hate invisible flush mounts, but you may not. Cheap as heck.

Footpegs/shifter/bracket? You might as well get the whole thing used. Pricey new. Keep it as a spare.

Centerstand rubber? Unless you are wearing Crocs, who cares. If it hurts your feet, you are not using the centerstand correctly. Seriously.

Oh yeah. buy case guards.....

noobrider -

cool, you're ok. you've already summarized what happened, and shared. that's a big plus man, thanks. we can all learn from each others mistakes. i don't own a set of leathers, but am looking into it now. i wanted a newer-ish sv650, but i think leathers would make more sense than another bike. ;)

yay, now get on with the nakked conversion, post lots of pictures, and check out some of the other 'fightered gs's on the forum. some of them are just plain awesome looking...

then again, who cares what it looks like, just ride the thing ;)

- glad you're ok man - ride on !

Thanks for sharing your story.

Just put mine back together from a crash it suffered... I have brand new OEM look alike miirrors and all but one turn signal for you... Also have the mounts for the headlight assembly if you decide to go the naked look. They are what slips over the forks for the headlight brackets to mount to.

It's all yours for $30 plus shipping.

noobrider

Thanks for the support and sharing ur knowledge guys! It definately taught me to wear gear all the time... and i recommend everybody who is thinking about it do to. I just purchased some mirrors and levers and need to get some other stuff.. inc. turn signals and the like. Still on the lookout for a fairing but i dont know if i will be lucky enough to have one pop up anywhere. Although after seeing the  GS without the "tupperware".. i was impressed.. so i may go that route.  Its gonna take some work but at  no major engine damage.. as i am not even close to being mechanically gifted in that department.
I do however promise not to wear crocs while deplying the centerstand, although i think i may end up getting rid of the dings in the tank.. whatever they were caused by   :o

Not sure if this is overkill, but some people have reported problems with their alternator following a left side crash (Goat's syndrome).

I would check to make sure there was no damage to the left side engine cover (cracks, etc.). You may want to open it up to check that all the magnets are intact. Again, this may be overkill, or may provide peace of mind.

Thanks for the heads up.. I dont notice any running problems yet but ill watch out for them.

So far Ive managed to repair most of the stuf and the bike is rideable again. but i am still on the lookout for a blue/white '07 left side fairing.
My biggest problem is the fuel tank.. as its not a little ding.. more like  a huge dent. I was gonna get a new one until i saw that they are 800 bucks.. and then suddenly the dent got smaller  :dunno_white:

I got some free "F" turn signals if you want. Well, three perfect ones that is. The fourth can be glued back together and the others just gotta lengthen the wires out. Give me a PM and let me know. Some help for shipping would be appreciated. They are just taking up room at my apt.

Thanks for the offer but i already ordered some new ones.

Anywyas guys.. i fixed the clutch lever and rode it for the first time again today with only the front cowling. the only major problem i noticed besides the cosmetic damage was  a lot of excess vibration, especially the fuel tank.. has anyone else experienced this as well?

don't ride the bike, check your wheels, frame, chain, brakes, and take the tank off. check for broken and cracked bits.

heavy vibrations can be a sign something is about to come off in a bad way.

Good news.. the vibrations were caused by a fuel tank that was shifted about 5 degrees to the right. Easy fix! I took it for a ride this morning.. and I saw a fellow rider on an orange GS500E on Sunset Blvd.
