Don't Feed the Bears! RADAR Detectors 101...

As the ole'sow runs dry the bears are out looking to feed! This is just my solution to a growing problemo..(a little Spanish lingo) :icon_mrgreen: This is for informational purpose's ONLY! Made for Motorcycle detectors are pretty expensive...this is a budget solution!  :thumb:

This first picture is of my Bel 916 detector mounted. It's mounted using industrial strength stick on back, velco that you can pick up at any fabric store. The last thing you need to worry about is your detector going bye-bye at 70mph! :icon_mrgreen:

This pictures is of the velcro stuck to the mount...it is a desk top light plug that was scrapped at work.It mounted directly to the mirror, kill switch screws!

This is the lighter plug and detector plug.It is zip strapped to the brake cable. The wiring job is on Kerry's site.(Thank's Kerry) :thumb:I ran the neg wire to the back of the horn screw where it mounts to the frame..(sand it a little).

Detector mount empty, with velcro straps.Velco is on the bottom of the mount also.

Detector velcro on top.

Detector velcro bottom.

Detector cord.Bel cord shortened.Wired to a Ratshack lighter plug.

The lighter plug that I started with was a plug that has two outlets.I clipped one off to use for the female. The other end was used with the shortened Bel wire, male.

A word on detectors.I've had a number of radar detectors and by far the Bel detectors are the best at detecting Ka radar for the price.I got my detectors off of Ebay.Used they can be had for as little as 20.00 shipped! These detectors sold new for as much as 150.00+,some much higher. You need to look for one with voice.A Bel 870STi is as low in series that I would go..You can always go up in series.Mine is a 916.With the volume all the way up I can hear it at 70mph no problem!
Escort 8500's,Valentine detectors are great detectors..but cost much more for not that much of a gain.I've picked up Ka radar (which is used by most agency's) up to 1 1/2 miles on the highway. In the city I always run in highway mode, and still pick up Ka up to 1/2 mile.Running in highway mode in the city you will get a few false signals. You learn where they are and adjust quickly.

Needless to say DO NOT use your detector in the WET! You will kill it.If it look's like rain, leave it at home or put it in your jacket! :nono:

The object is not to be the first in line on the road.Unless the popo has it on constant mode.you can get popped very easy.Let some other sheep play ramrod for you.Let them get about 1/2 mile in front of you and pay attention.Learn the habits of the local popo's.They are creatures of habit. So make use of that info!
The object isn't to be a jet pilot..but to not get caught doing 5 over in a 30mph zone! Your insurance company is watching. And for Pete's sake people,be careful out there!

Well, either you're part of the problem, part of the solution,...

have you gotten any speeding tickets while using it, and do the cops hassle you about it ?

Belive it or not the BF is new :icon_mrgreen: I think my glass is dirty.. :icon_mrgreen:

I haven't had any tickets for about 20yrs.I just took what I've learned about the detectors with my car and transfered it.I've not had the detector on the bike that long about a year and a half.It sits under the fairing and blends into the rest of the controls. They are legal in my state,so no worries mate.I'm sure if you get pulled over..that would raise a few eyebrows,But hey if you get pulled your going to get it anyway :laugh:If you follow the rules above you just enhanced your odds by 75%...

Cool dude..There must be a hundred ways to do it.This is what happens when you go out to the garage to smoke a cigar without nothing to do. :icon_mrgreen: By all means try this at home... :icon_mrgreen:

Up until last year, I had been riding motorcycles for 15 years without a motorcycle license.Never once had a problem and I used to rip it up when I was younger.2 months after I got my MC permit,4th July week,I got caught in 2 license checks.1 going into work and 1 turning down the road I live off of.Both on the same day.No tickets tho.

Nice rig job.  i've rigged myself a Whistler to my GS, and now I'm trying to save up some money to get the TPX System.  Maybe my gf will get it for me for X-Mas... I've been good!

Just FYI....most agencies are going away from K-band radar now.  Mobile units *must* be radar, because mobile laser doesn't work, but that K-band detector wont' do you any good if they're using stationary laser.  Laser detectors are the suck also, because when they go off, you've already been lasered.

Heres one for you. From what I understand some of the companies that make the RADAR guns also make the detectors! So, they play both ends against the middle. -- JIm:)

Well, I have never used my detector on my motorcycle, but I can say I absolutely love my Valentine 1. It seems to pick up police around 1-1.5 miles out if they are retards driving around with it on all the time, and that is the problem- most police have been trained now to just turn it on and off so it's harder for radar detectors to know they are coming. Laser detection is a joke, unless you get a lucky bounce off another car into your detector sensor you were already lasered when it goes off. That and some LED brake lights and neon signs. I have the remote display for my v1 also, so I have it mounted high on the windsheild for better detection but it doesn't light up that happens at a panel on my dash so it's not real obvious it's there. I find the directional arrows with a source counter to be effective at determining how much of a threat the signal is you are picking up. I bought a V1 because all my other cheaper ones falsed so often I didn't even use them anymore. The V1 will false as well but when you see multiples of 2 to the side, you know it's auto doors and the full logic mode suppresses x band enough it still lights up but doesn't chirp so it's good for in town.

Paulcet

I like my V-1 as well.  I leave it in logic mode, and let my brain do the "full logic" filtering.
