If you get the lunchbox it will replace the stock airbox. And yes, you'll have to remove the tank to install. I believe if you use the lunchbox you have to rejet, even if you don't have an after market exhaust.

The lunchbox growls ... sounds like a much bigger bike ,

If you get the lunchbox, try to keep the rubber part (where it connects to the carb) oiled. If it dries out like mine did over the winter it will be difficult to install again. And like Jay_wolf said, it does sound meaner. I like mine.

removing the tank and air box is a 15 min job  :thumb:

If you are keeping the stock exhaust get the dropin and don't remove the restrictor. If you're upgrading the exhuast get the lunch box.You will have to rejet with the lunch box and or an exhaust change.Just do it all at once upgrade exhuast, lunch box,and rejet once and be done. You can change air filters in 15 to 20 minutes.Even the stock filter requires tank removal.
PICS are GONE never TO return.

Is it worth it to get the lunchbox and rejet if using the stock exhaust?

I'm running 40's, 125's, with one washer, three turns out on the air screw.    Has all the symptoms of richness.   Gonna try one more turn out on the air screw, but I'm thinking I may need a drop in K&N or even a lunch box.   Anyone running my set up w/ stock exhaust  and tried one of the K&N filters?
Attack but have a back up plan

NEWGS500F

OK, so I considered doing this mod next...

My bike is a GS500F K7 model, stock exhaust and no other mods to the engine etc........

Now, what would be best (K&N wise) in terms of performance and cost in my circumstances?  Note: the lower the cost right now, the better  :icon_mrgreen:

That's exactly what I did, and the bike is a lot better than with the stock airbox. Talk to Buddha about jets.

My GS is nice and quiet in town but if I open it up, the airbox growls and howls, and it sounds like a racer, even with the stock pipe.

Just beaware rejetting is required if using a K&N Lunchbox filter. My bike couldn't rev past 6,000RPM under load when I wacked just the filter on it lets that much more air in  :icon_twisted:

I'd go the drop in over the lunchbox. I've just taken my lunchbox off and put the air box, with k&N drop in, back on the bike. The bike runs better with the box on it.
The more I learn about women, the more I love my bike.

I love my K&N lunchbox and my bike goes much better (and sounds tougher) with it.

In saying thaqt, you have to get the jetting right, and I'm at an advantage of having a 2005 model that has the 3 stage carb.
