Jetting and Motor swap questions...

Hey all,

Just got a friends GS500 to the house to fix it/fix it up.

It's an 89 and has gone to crap from NON-use not A-Buse!

Got it running and rode it down the street. I'm impressed for 30 some HP! Rides good. Carburates Horrible off idel.

Did some searching on here and noticed re-jetting is reccommended even on a stock bike. I shimmed the needles and adjusted the screws but it still has a lean stumble right off idle.

Question - stock pilots are at 37.5. What jet sizes SHOULD I be running so i can go get some at the Stealer??

Also, i like these bikes but more HP would be even better. Anyone ever swapped ANY type of motor into the frame?? MX motor? 2-smoke? anything? I'm starting to get the hankering for a one-of-a-kind kick-a$$ project?

Any ideas?

Thanks for the answers as i'm sure I'll be asking a lot more questions before this thing is done! Also, anyone that has a good tank, please let me know! Couldn't fine one in the classified (that's still for sale anyway). Also, up to what year are the tanks interchangeable?

Thanks!

Matt in GA

As far as motor swaps go, there have been a few. I think someone has done a cr500 2 stroke engine, and I know a couple of people have put gr650 motors in there.

Usually for a stock bike 40 pilots and 125 mains are a good starting point...I'm sure some others will chime in on that too. :dunno_white:

Tank compatibility:
89-00
01+ (tank, tail body work and seat changed)

01+ tanks will fit 89-00 frames but the seat will fit a little odd. The 89-00 tail would need a mount added up front.
Common sense in not very common.

Anyone know a good source / part number for the 40 pilot jest?

Parts shop has lots of jets but they all have the holes in the side of the shaft and not the solid shaft like the stock jets. Any ideas? Can I drill the stock jets with a drill bit? - What size bit if so? I'm sure it be a wierd hobby bit. Just looking for a quick/easy solution. Last time i ordered jets for a 76 Kawi kz900 it took 1.5 MONTHS to get them in!!!

Thanks,
Matt

Jets can be had at the dealer for 2.50 a pop and they're typically in stock.  Jetting all depends on what mods you have/plan to have.  If you're gonna mod the crap out of this motor, then run it pig rich and until you get a lunchbox/vance or whatever pipe you want or any extras from there.  People on here have turbo'd it, (only one that I know of though) like bucks said, put a cr500 motor in.  You can bore it to a 5xx cc motor with a stroker kit I believe.  Streetfighter, cafe racer, superbike look, sky's the limit.  I like the rat rod look myself especially with a cheap bike like the GS.  If it were a faster, different style bike, then I may do something a bit different.  Have fun looking at the wiki for jetting info and the matrix, or pantablos site that he has.  The wiki is in the first general forum in the stickies.  Look up pantablo for his site.  Also check the photo gallery for ideas of what you like and or don't like.  Have fun man.
GS500E with a bunch of cool stuff!
