well i am not sure if it is normal but sometimes when i come to a stop or down shift to first it seems i have to press the gear shift down alot harder to get it into first or it goes down easy but not into first only nuetral.  also sometimes i will try to down shift and it wont shift at all i will press down and it feels kinda like its shifting but when i go to move again im in like 3 or 4 gear.  i adjusted the clutch tonight but also did my master cylinder repair so i cant test it untill tomorrow.  is it just me or is this usual or can i fix it? :dunno_white:

Most of the time hard shifts can be corrected by an oil/filter change and making sure the oil level is correct. If you use auto oil make sure it's not rated for energy conservation or has friction modifiers that can cause clutch slipages. This info is on the back of the bottle in fine print.

All older bikes do it, dont worry about. Sometimes it will drop into 1st from a standstill sometimes it wont. The difficulty engaging 1st from a standstill is down to the fact the gears are trying to mesh but are out of position relative to each other and not lining up. Drop the clutch for a second or two, get things moving in the box then try again. Fresh oil might help but you will never get rid of the problem.......there is no syncromesh in a GS5 g/box

thanks for the replies i just checked the oil last night and it looked kind dark.  i just bought it so i dont know when the last oil job was.  My bike is a 2005 model so im not sure if that is considered older. im gonna go ahead and do an oil change this weekend and let you guys know what happens

Just remember that the oil drain plug and filter cover nuts don't need to be very tight.Just a little more than snug or they will break off.BTW I agree with Sledge about the GS gear box gears not lining up well and from time to time most everyone runs into the missed first gear.I do and I maintain my engine like no other.

Same problem here (just lately) and my bike has 700 miles on the clock and is getting serviced this weekend for the first time....

I had the same kinda problem on another bike (a GZ125 which had 800 miles on the clock when I got it) and I also heard of various folk having this bother whilst I done bike training...instructor simply said "Roll the bike back a little" and sure enough, bike dropped into gear, no problem.

I was a bit worried but it does seem common enough...oh yes, and the bikes at the training school were Yamahas...so, its probably more common than many think.

I found low oil level to cause missed 2-1 shifts as well as 5-6.

i concur i usually downshift into neutral before i even start braking sometimes and if you cant seem to get it into first from neutral just roll it forward or backwards a little and itll go in like butter

ben2go, you're trying everything to get more replies on that posting!

Is auto-oil advisable for the GS engines?  I thought they were an absolute no-no  :nono:  :nono:  :nono:.  If its ok, which types can be used safely?  :dunno_white:

I usually bypass neutral and go straight for 1st from 2nd. :dunno_white:  ...that way I'm already in gear should impending danger be behind me.

Not trying for more replies.Trying to get people to understand the proper way to check their oil to prevent major engine damage.Less we spend in money and down time the more we enjoy our rides.More replies isn't going to get me anything.
