Is it possible to disassemble the gauges?

I bought some gauges from a guy who had them sitting outside on an old bike.

First I'd like to take the gauges out of the metal plate that they sit in, but I cannot get the speedo out of the plate because the trip rese knob prevents me from getting it out.  Is there a screw that holds that in?

Then, I'd like to take the internals out of the tach, and put them in my tach (mine jumps around from 4500 to 7000 RPM's.  I would use the whole tach, but the faceplate is faded.

Can I disassemble the tach to swap over the internals?  It doesn't look like there is a way to do it without possible damaging something.

Anyone ever done this?

In order to disassemble the gauges, you will need to cut them open... I believe Starwalt has a writeup on how to do this.

As a side note, if your tach is jumpy, the problem is more likely with the cable than the gauge. You may want to try removing the tach cable and using a cable lube tool to get it fully lubricated.

I guess $15-$20 for a new cable is a small price to pay to fix it.  I did take the cable out of the sheath, and lube it with moly grease, but it still does it.

I still need to get the speedo out of the plate.

Any suggestions for that?

Yes, there's a screw holding the knob in.
It's a VERY small one, you need a small Phillips-head jeweler's screwdriver to unscrew it.

As for the gauge opening part, I don't know

I opened a set once.. You just have to cut all the way around w/ a dremel then tape/glue it back together

You dont have to cut anything. To get the metal black ring off the white bucket use a flathead screwdriver and pry up the metal edge folded onto the bucket. Work it around and you will eventually get the whole ring off. Then unscrew the two Phillips heads on the gauge and it will come out.

Yea, Wild bill ... You have done that? Lets see some pics of what the rings look like now.

Good luck if you want to try that. cutting it is much faster, easier and you wont have a f'ed up metal ring when you are done.
