Brake problem: reservoir window broken

The window on my front brake reservoir broke today on my way to work. I was stopped at a light and made the mistake of wiping it with my thumb (the plastic has always been crappy looking and you can't actually see the fluid) and the damn thing cracked. It is not leaking terribly but the plastic is wet with brake fluid. I really can't afford the $150 replacement reservoir right now. Is there any way i can repair it? I don't really care if i loose the use of the window, you couldn't see through it anyway.

My understanding is that there is no replacement made/available, other than the $150.

If you are handy, you could try making a new window and gluing it in with epoxy (or making a new window from epoxy, perhaps?)

Search the archives, this problem has come up before (it's a poor design).

Someone else epoxied a bolt/nut/washer in place, I think. Probably best to test whatever glue you use for working with brake fluid. Need to clean the brake fluid off the affected area for any glue to work.

yeah i searched around on the internet and found a thread on another forum about a guy that just glued a quarter over the hole with rtv super black gasket maker and he had pretty good results. i might just try that tomorrow.

I would post an ad in the For Sale section; I'm sure someone has a used reservoir they would sell for much less than $150. Brakes are too important to mess around with coins and RTV silicone!  :icon_rolleyes:

I agree

I have seen others even on here do half a$$ repairs to that little window. I would use a quarter or something as a VERY TEMPORARY solution but get a new/used one ASAP

I'd sell you one for $25 like I did with my friend earlier this week. That is if you meant 1/4 of a  benjamin and not 1/4 of a washington. I'd rather weld or bolt it shut before fitting a coin and siliconing it.
Cool.
