Hey!   I have had my 89 ek for about 9 years.   My buddy borrowed it for a couple months (he wrecked his second car) and brought it back with the bottom of a piston hanging out the bottom.  I've been slowly taking it apart and trying to find out what else is wrong with the engine,  and I am pretty sure i can just replace the bottom end and it will be resurrected!  It has unfortunatly been sitting for quite some time, and I really don't know what to look for on the bike that might have gone bad just by sitting.   I'm really not very motorcycle savvy, I'm more of a car guy.  But, I am a proficiant mechanic....So,  any advice?

yeah......a secondhand engine is the cheapest and easiest answer.

I found 1 engine in wisconsin for $200 and it would cost me about $100 to ship it.  Do you think I could find a less expensive bottom end?

sure, but engage your mechanic's brain and think of all the shards of metal flying around and all those precisely ground parts SMASHING into each other for 500-600 rpm's while your buddy redlined it with no oil.

yep, that engine is toast. dig into AFTER you replace it if you like. I'll bet you find the journals are gone (top and bottom), the case is cracked, and oil starvation issues.

never trust the bottom to not eff up the top ! :)
