Solo Seats

Seeing the posts come up again about solo seats got me thinking of seats I've made in the past.... and I tripped over the pics of the one I did for a GS500e awhile ago.

So here are some pics.

It's a stock seat I added closed cell foam too and carved/shaped the added foam to the shape I wanted. Patterned- sewed and installed the new upholstery.

You could maybe still put a passenger on it as it's all foam and upholstery...but the "solo" shape might  have a passenger tending to slide off side to side easier with the shape of it.

Opinions?

The only thing I might have done differently is make the back section a contrasting color, maybe Purple.
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

I really like that. It would look slick with another color for the rear section.

Yeah I had thought of making it match each bike-- but it's hard to really get a good match  with paint and vinyls......they vary from dye lot to dye lot ( vinyls ) just like paint does...and they actually can look  different in different light conditions....  The all black goes with everything so I just did it all in black.

That seat just happened to be made while I had that particular bike here (bike was a for sale bike..). If I was making it for someone with a particular color- they'd have to pick the color they wanted for the tail section so there would be no unhappiness after the seat was made.

I made that particular seat a few years ago..(it's probably still on the bike it went with...who knows??).

it's similar to the corbin "Gunfighter" model I guess. ( I have one on my ZX11 too.... it's like sitting down in a notch in the bike...fit's me well..).

Anyone happen to want one made?

I think I would be interested in that for my '04. It's yellow, would that be possible to color match the rear section. I understand it would never be an exact match.

as always, jared posts some cool stuff. nice job man, got any idea what the price would be for you to do that, and if >20 folks wanted it done, shipping zip, all that ?

cool mod, looks great.

also- any input from passengers about the comfort on that hump ?

Thanks Guys.

How does it ride.... just like your stock seat- it's a modified stock seat.   For a passenger I doubt it would be real comfy for a long ride - it's fairly dense closed cell foam- and I didn't really make it to have a passenger ride on it- but if you had to put someone on it for a short ride I think you could manage ( like I said the shape of it might make it feel like you'd slide off the sides a little more..). The solo section comes up where the stock seat comes up so that's how far from the tank the raised area will be if you want to have an idea on your bike.

The  best way to do this (over the internet) is you get a spare seat ( cover can be bad as long as the foam is in good/ decent shape) to send to me to modify. I make the seat and send it back- this way you aren't without a seat for your bike.

Hmmm how much.  If I were to go by industry standards.... more than most would want to pay...Heheheh.

$135 a seat  and you pay shipping two ways if you want to buy 20 of them  ;).  That's no markup on the foam or vinyl and me working cheap.

I've been doing more of this type of work  lately here at my home shop ... thought I'd revive this  thread.

Looks great, I'm always impressed with the work people can do on seats. I've never tried it, but it definitely seems like the kind of thing that would come out awful if I was to try.

Jared

Thanks again guys...

I've been doing this stuff off and on since the late 90's.. It helps having the right tools that's for sure . My sewing machine uses a 3/4 Hp motor ...commercial unit..even has a clutch . That and all the other stuff (upholstery  staplers...foam saws etc etc...) makes it easier to do a good job.
TT---It's a skill yeah but it's also the know how . IE if someone showed you how to do it I'm sure you could do a better job than you think.

How about non-solo, just a more comfortable seat.  My seat hurts by butt. It needs better foam, and more of it, and the step does not help.

TheRealSpinner

Yeah, not to be a jerk, but it is a lot easier to upholster a seat than you think.  I've done one so far.  It wasn't hard, but it did take a lot of time, and it came out fine.  Not perfect, but pretty darn good.

Heheheh....good one mister...Holy NECRO post

Spinner- yeah like I said- a fairly simply recover of the Gs seat isn't too hard... You're not being a jerk....

When you get into seats with sewn  color inlays  and very weird front shapes (Try a ZX11 D seat without sewing a patterned front piece)...it get's more fun.
Let's not even get into some of the intricate car bucket seats or boat seats (Think go fast helm seats ...say a Fountain...). They have to be perfect...where I worked they had to be...and they do when I do them too.

Most people underestimate their own potential and abilities tho.
I consider myself a "Renaissance man"- I do upholstery, boat canvas , I weld (mig steel and aluminum-no tig setup yet) , I do woodworking, metalworking once upon a time ( when I get my own house I want to get a small gas forge...), I fix motorcycles , I'm the "company electrician" at my job on top of all my other duties. I'm a good marksmen  and I'm a decent technical artist (drafting..).

Nothing you can't do if you want to.Some people are gifted more tho...

Ok I'm done rambling...

Rubber Side down.
