I was fiddling around with one of the new GS500F's at a dealership, and man does that turn signal switch feel nice. Looks better than stock to boot!

First, if I were to just acquire the 2001+ turn signal switch, would it be a simple fit to get it working on my pre-2001 GS500E?

Second, is there anything I can do to the switch I have now to make it's operation 'slicker'? Thanks.

I don't think you can replace just the switch. I think you're pretty much stuck replacing the whole switch assembly. As long as you get one with the same connector on it as your current one, it should be simple to swap them. I looked into it once because my turn signal switch is terrible. I went to a junkyard and dug through their box of switch clusters, but couldn't find one that was any better than the one on my bike, so I just forgot about it...

You don't think that even if you cut the wires to the harness and soldered them to the old harness for a stock fit that it would work? Everything on that switch assembly just opens and closes circuits, it doesn't introduce any additional load to the electrical system. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the hi/lo beam switch *could* be backwards, since I've come across that in my Toyota. In that case, the switch would just act in reverse. Bueller?
