Anybody?  I figured I would check here before going the ebay route.

The Buddha

I think I can find one ... I can open it test it for leaks or being stuck and refit it (or paint and powdercoat the spring and body) and send to you ... $25-35 as is uglier = cheaper, figure $35 for a paint and powdercoat ...
Cool.

Your the man Buddha, painted and powder coated sounds great.  I guess PM me when you have one?  You only get the cheap powder coat for black right? Not other colors?

The Buddha

Cheap black ??? ... no correlation between color and price ... red = yellow = black = green ... and no I wont do green ... a beating for you if you even ask ...

What will cost more is multi layered colors ... like I have this eyepopping color that is actually a speckled silver under candy blue ... 2 layers = 2 X (or close ). However that is a total waste for something that sits under the bike where the sun dont shine ...

I cannot color match ... yellow is yellow is yellow ... cant get your exact shade of canary yellow. Having said that, the 98 yellow, the red they made 90-93 I think and the black all match shades I have done.

We do this ... we buy a dirty ass shock that is good, check it by opening it and making sure the hydraulics and the rebound etc etc works ... Its usually cheaper if its ugly ... then we take it apart and sand and paint the body and powdercoat the springs, retainers, collars and 1/2 moons.

OK I am in Tennessee starting this weekend ... may be able to make some calls and source it but cannot start on it till I get back ~1st nov. That OK ? You dont have to pay me till I buy it.

You could buy the crappiest, cheapest shock you see on fleabay ... however if it got a hydraulic problem (not at all common really to be honest) then you're stuck ... and we can do the same thing.
Cool.

I should have explained the $$ a bit better ... Paint and powdercoat of the shock will cost additional $35. Not including the shock price.
$25 to powdercoat the collar, the 1/2 moons, the retaining ring and the spring. I usually will do the 1/2 moons and spring in 1 color, the collar and the retaining ring in black. So you have a good alternating color scheme. You can do anything ... all 5 can be 5 colors if you like ... or are Ghay ...
$10 to paint the body ... I prefer shiny black ... but can do other colors, flat black, semi gloss black, high temp black ... you get the idea ... OK OK pay for a rattle can and I'd do any color.
Cool.

Sounds great, Im in no big hurry.  I sold some old wheels from my car, so I have a little extra cash.  I would like black w/red powdercoat.  Just let me know when and I will paypal you some money.  We are thinking like 50-60 total including shipping?? thanks again!

The Buddha

50-80 ... I open and close it free ... sand and paint I hit you for $10, powdercoating is whatever the guy charges me ... spring ~20, the other 5 pieces $5 has been a good average.
Shock usually is 25-35 ... I'll get the crappiest looking ones ... but see I already did and sold it to bombadillo ... the last 2 I split were nice ... one was actually so good I didn't even think it needed much but he wanted it ... so off it goes.
OK red and black ... red tiger ... wheee whee ... oh wait a min ... next month ... OK wheee then.
Cool.

Psyber ... your shock was nearly the nicest I have laid hands on ... I am against splitting open very nice shocks and powder coating them. It will get bad with a few years of crap flung at it. Then we can always do it.

And I found it jchc413, $35 and $35 for split+test+powder+paint+refit, $10 shipping.
I can get it sunday. You may be able to have it ~1-1.5-2 weeks.

That will work for me. 80 total??  I can paypal you today! :)

The Buddha

Good news and bad news ...
Good news ... found it, bought it, opened it its working ...
Bad news. It comes with this funky cable to pull and push the thing etc etc for adjusting the rebound. When opening it, I should have had the presence of mind to have removed it ... anyway its useless ... I could have left it off and it will have been fine ... but the cable eyelet  which is a plastic wheel, broke. Now that 1/2 wheel actually turns and adjusts the rebound just fine ... just that a removal will have looked better than the break in that plastic dial. I will send pics tommorow.

hmm ok that sucks, pics?  Its still fully functional?  will that have any effects long term?

The Buddha

It is 100% functional. The dial broke in 1/2 ... I have the busted off part, and I just checked a few times today ... I had to ahve split the shock differently to get that dial in 1 piece ... as in, my current methodology is entirely useless ... I would have had to make a whole different mechanism ...
Too much work ... I'd stay away from the ones that have the cable puller here on out.
Anyway all shock bodies are painted ... powdercoat drop tuesday by the wife. The whole damn trunk of the mitsu is loaded up and I ahve enough for another run in 2-3 weeks ... I've not coated stuff in a few months ... gaaa ... piles up easy.
I am doing a black spring and blue body on my shock ... a negative shock if you can call it that ... I may do silver body and silver under candy blue spring ... though being 90% invisible is a waste for high $$$ powdercoating.
Cool.

soooo am I still getting my shock?? As long as it is still as you say that is fine with me.  You want payment now?  $80? Powdercoat on tuesday you say?  That candy blue with black spring sounds like it will look nice

The Buddha

Candy blue ... no ... its a regular blue. Candy colors are transparent. They are best applied over another bright color, like speckled silver or on chromed steel.
Yours will be the blue in this pic ... the spring, not the dash top panel.
http://picasaweb.google.com/srinath.the.man/PoppedOpenShocks#

Regular blue.

Yea Pm me I'll send you my paypal ID. The 1/2 dial still turns just fine and works the rebound fine too. The cable thing is usually a royal PITA anyway ... I have always taken it off. I should send you pics ... tommorow night. Tonight I have to do some stuff.

Cool.

Sr****h,

Want to do a swap deal? I have a gxsr shock on mine with a res but I don't ride the bike long or hard enough to take advantage of it. I'm also only 135 lbs. I would like to swap it for a pretty powdercoated kat shock.

The Buddha

Ha ha ... I have no more katana shocks and a couple GSXR shocks ... I amy or may not even get more kat shocks, I have stayed in my neighborhood so far ... buying shocks with some guarantees that they work or $$ back, and I press them open right there before buying so I know its not total POS ... no more ...

Kat owners should be good with GSXR shocks ... try selling em there ... if it works I'll follow ...

Of late ... all the cheapo stuff off ebay ... kat shocks, kat forks etc etc have all disappeared ... and ... (eyeing all the assembled gstwinners with suspicion) I think its someone in here ...
Cool.

Seamax - maybe you can swap springs off a GS into the GSXR shock ... hydraulics on the GSXR are bound to be good enough adjustable that they will be fine.

If the GS spring will fit  it will work well, you just run it on quickest rebound and tightest compression setting. If its too flaccid, turn in a little more preload. GSXR shock has a lot of preload adjustment.

Worst case is ... if the fluid column is still too stiff, compresses too much (cant see this as too likely though the spring takes a part in this) and opens too slow (possible, its opened  entirely by the spring tension) ... you can open up the shock gently tip it out and slide it a bit and empty the fluid and run thin fluid in it. Like 2.5 wt. I think it has 10wt stock.

GSXR shocks are insanely good. They can be opened with a spanner and resealed with power transmission supply store stuff. Just that ... they are a bit much for the smaller GS people. There are no small GS people, just too stiff shocks ...
